The Columbvr Beacon, a new week
ly started by Mr. Julian A. Selby, is
received. It presents a very credita
ble appearance, and bids fair to be a
very readable and popular newspaper.
General Bratton has gone to Charles
ton to attend to his duties as Com
missioner of Phosphates. lie will be
absent two ofnthrpe,no4ths. We be
lieve the compensation of the Commis
sioners is five dollars a day.
Mr. Wim. 11. Donly advertises some
very nice groceries at prices that
cannot fail to give satisfaction. lie
has on hand a large assortment of
goods in his line, and will sell them
at prices that cannot fail to tempt and
to please his customers. Give hin a
call and make an investment.
The, gentleman in charge of the
post-office last Friday night. explains
that he did not hear the knock or call
of the employe 1 of 'Tu NEWS AND
IERALID who carried the mall pack
ages to the office on that occasion.
We readily accept this explanation as
exonerating tihe gentleman from any
blame In the inatter, and for any
injustice we may have done him cheer
f ully make the amende.
CANCELLING POSTAGE STAMP's ON
RAIRtOADS.-Mr. Waddell, of North
Carolina, recently offered an amenid
ment to the p6pgoffice law, which was
adopted, directing the post-oflice em
ployes on railroads who c,ancel stamps
to keep) ani account of tihe stamps so
cancelled, the same to be credited to
the postmaster at the station where
the mail was put on the cars, for the
p)urpose of fixing tile basis for the
salary of such postmaster.

A meeting of farmers was held at
Ridgeway on the 1st instant to consid
er the recent combination of manu
facturers to raise . the price of ferttli
zers. A large' attendance was there
from Ridgeway, Cedar Creek, Bear
Creek, Dutchman's Creek, and Long
town, both white and colored farmers
participating. 'Col. T. Hi. Jones was
