We have been requested to st#te that a iicked squad of the Goi don Light Infantry will drill in the Thesplan Iall on Monday evening next, at 8 o'clock. The admission fee will be only ten cents. At a meeting of the stockholders of the Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad, held in Columbia on Friday, the following-named gentlemen were elected officers of the corporation: John B.. Palmer, president; A. S. Buford,'vice-president; C. Bouknight, secretary; J. C. B. Smith, treasur; T. M. R. Talcott, general superintendent; T. D. Kline, superlutendent; J. H4. The annual communication of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in Charleston last week. There was a full attendance of delegatei from subordinate Lodges, and the ses sion was u1nusunally interesting. An address upon the history of Masonry i this State was delivered by Past Grabnd Master Wilmot G. DeSaussure, whicli was ordered to be printed with the proceedings. Jordan and Miss l Belle Gooding were married in pi Charleston; and on the sane evening n Mr. J. M. Beaty was married in o Mlayesville, Sulmter county, to Miss o 8. E. Wilson of that place. A r, number of friends accompanied the o prospective bridogroomns to their re- 1) spective Meccas, and participated in o the festivities. Mr, Beaty returned u with his charming bride to Winnsboro on Friday. The same evening a num ber of relatives and friends assembled, by Invitation, at Capt. James Beaty's to welcome the happy pair. It was a most enjoyable affair, one of the most Interesting features being the pres once of three newly married couples in the same family. On Monday Captain Jordan brought his charming young wife back to Winnsboro. A y military hop is announced in honor of the two gentlemen. In conclusion let us add our own to the general congratulations. We know not to whom the greatest praise belongs, . whether to Captain Jordan for bring ing back one who has always been a universal favorite, or to Mr. Beaty for capturing from a sister county one who, though a stranger now, is destined to become a general favorite in the near future. It has been the constant effort of the publishers of this paper to furinish to the people of Fairtleld a county newspaper that should be without a superior in Sou.-h Carolina. The labor aid ex pense necessarily involved have been' great, and the retin in actual proft very small. It would be aI very eziy matter for us to clitng the chiaracter of the paper, and there-by both dimiii ish our labor and inerease our prolits, but to such al expedient we shall never resort, unless absolutely lorced by want of proper support. There are too chief ditUiulties uider which we have labored. The fiest is, that many persons who take the paper and read it da not pay for it. These we have kept upon our lists, as sured that they would come forward and settle up. We have, we honestly think, giveni them the full wvorth of thme subscriptionm money, and it; is not unt reasonable that wve should exp)ect the money to be forthcoming. it must be borne in mind by each subscriber that though tihe amo~unt fronm each is small, yet it is up)on the aggregate of these little sums that the life of every newspaper depends. Decrease these little sources of Income, and the busi neOss soon becomes not only poorly remunerative, but ultimately without any profit wvhatever. It will not do, therefore, for the subscriber to comfort: himself by saying, "Oh, the little that I owe can't make much difference." The same argument mig'ht be used by every one-with what result it is very easy to see.--Another drawback expe rienced by TusR NEws AND IIERALD) is the fact that a very large number of pleople who ought to take the paper do not sub)scribe. Most of' these take some newspaper, and pay for it, but rely upon their neighbors for county news and borrow their neighbor's county paper. This Is not as it should be. Every man having at heart the wlfaure of the county is directly and p)ersonal ly interested In thme maintenance of a good paper at the county scat. In such a paper they have at once an ex ponent of their vie ws and an advocate of their interests, social, moral, mate rial and political. The small outlay of' money is amly rep)aid in leasure and in~ positive advantage.
