It is free from opium. Piice 25 cents a bottle. * The Fairfield Fire Engine Com pany were out for undress drill on Thursday afternoon. Drills of this kind will be kept up regularly, and will be of gret benelit to the fire men, in familiarizing them with the workings of their apptratus. FATAL AcCIDENT.-Jacob Moore, a colored man living on the plantation of Mr. Charles Timms, about two miles from Winnsboro, met with a fatal accident on Thursday. He was riding his mule from the field after work, when the animal, from some cause, took fright and ran off. Moore was thrown to the ground, and, becoming entun;lei in the harness, was dragged about half a mile. From the bruises thus re ceived he died in a very short time. THE CANDIDATE.-How doth the busy candidate improve on Keeley's motor, in laying plots and fixing dots to circumvent the voter. See how he smiles with winning wiles, s3e how he grasps your flipper, in a bar-room near he calls for beer, or treats you to a nipper. And talks of craps and then perhaps inquires about your wife and your cross-eut saw and your your m other-in-law and your pigs and cutting-knife. Then he breathes in your ear his serious fear "This country has gone to the devil, and you, too, wvill go if you don't soon show that your head is all hunky and level. Your only safe plan is to choose you a man who's fitted to save you by nature, The chance man is before you. No longer to bore you, vote for me for the Legislature." AROUND TOWN.-Pop ! goes the prip-gun. The evenings are too short for courting. A little manna and a few quails on toast-would help along amaz ingly. Augusta watermelons were for sale on the cars yesterday at $1.25 apiece. Calisthenic wands are known at home as the genuine "come home husband clubs." The Histrionic Club are preparing a pleasing programme for the Fourth of July. A mad dog was on the streets yesterday, but made its escape be fore it could be killed. Centennial treats are in order now. Every fellow throws in a cent, and the proceeds are invested in wild plums. When a candidate's name appears in the paper it introduces him to the whole county at once. Read the announcements. THE CONFEDERATE MONUMENT. We would invite special attention to the notice and requests published in another column by Mrs. W. R. Robertson, the agent, for Fairfield county, of the Monumental Associa. tion of Columbia. It is desired that the ladies of Fairfield should join in an effort to raise the sum that the Association request as a contribution from the counity, and with thls,vi.wk th zeo.n o- Mo. day will be held. We hope the ladies, and the men too, will join heartily in the proposed pl n. While other conties are doing their sh tre, it will n)t (> f.r this one to be behimlhuni. With so much to be proud of in the record of her soldiers, in the sacrifieos she made for the Lost Caut e, and with so many of her brave sons sleeping in unmarked graves, their lives given for their State and for con stitutional freedom, Fairfield should do a prominent p'rt in the work of perpetuating, the memory, and in vin dicating the worth, the p-ttriotismu and the heroism of her dead sol diers.
