WINNSBORO, S. C. TUIDLZ, JUNZ 18, 178. B. M1Axs DA rs, PDiTOR. I8o 5. BYNIOLD. AlQOQIOTa EDITOR. TUE EURoPEAN CoNxotESs has met, all the Powers being represented by their loading statesmen. Around the board sit Bisma:rck, of Gorn.. y ; ]3eaconsficld, of Great Britiin: Gortschakoff, of Russia, and Andras sy, of Austria, with their colleagues of lesser note. The four mentioned are the diplomatic giants of Europe, and in their hands they hold the destinies of millions. It "is a sad thought that a hard boiled egg, or' a badly cooked beefsteak, by its dyspeptic influence, may at any time break up negotiations, and cause five million of armed mon to rush together in mortal conflict. The Liberia Emigrants. The News and Courier has re ceived a telegram from its special correspondent, Mr. Williams, stat ing that the Liberian ship, Azor, containing two hundred and fifty colored emigrants has arrived at Sierra Leone, a point not far from her destination. The supply of water was not sufficient and much suffering resulted. In addition, ship fever broke out and destroyed twenty-three lives, a tenth part of the passengers. Full particulars are not given ; but, the mengre details tell enough. The distress ing circumstances attending the voyage are attributable to over crowding. Two hundred and fifty human beings packed away in a small ship, in a warm climate, necessarily induces a tendency to 'disease, while the fatal imnprovi ,ence regarding the water supply inereased the trouble tenl fold. The fi.tst essay of the Exodus Associa. .bion may be set down as a failuro. :It will be hard to induce emigrants .to try their fortunes in a barbarous region, where they run the addition .1 risk of losing one-tenth of th<' number from disenso and privations. We are glad to see that the repro sentativo of the News and Courier made the trip safely. In Solid Column. 'Every true Democrat must have been filled with exultation en Satur day at the showing made by the Democratic party in the County Convention. Every club in Fair. field, sixteen in number, was repro sented ; the number of delegates sixby-nine--sixteen at large, and 'fifty, three for membership, showing an aggregate enrollmetnt of over fourteen hundred Democrats in the .county. Of the sixty-nine deb gates, but one was absent. When it is 1amemb,ered that the' total white population in the county scarcely exceeds seven thousand, it wvill he seen that only a few voters remain' outside the organization. while almost all of these, and we 1h0p) all, are in full accord with the party and will enroll themselves as soon as the campaign fairly opens. The material of which the Con. vention was comp)osed was ex ceptionally good. Representative men of all) classes and views were present, making as intelligent a body as can be found in any county. Another most gratifying feature wvas the harnmony that pervaded the: proceedings. The endorsement of Governor Hampton and the Stato ticket, the re-election of General Bratton to the (ihairmnanship he has filled so well for two years past, and the nomination of Major Woodward for Congress, found no dissenting voice. All this speaks volumes for tihe patriotism, the earnestness and the intelligeneo of the Democrata of Fairnoeld. What ever serious differences may have at other times existed, appear to have been entirely reconciled., There may be, and doubtless are, minor differences, but those do not, affect the general welfare. It may therefore be confidently affirmed that the' Democracy of Fairfield, on all vital questions, is a unit, and.l inoreover that it is a live, aggres.. sive force Th ale r cag od since 1875. Then the litadic:als were solid, exultant and detiant.. They are now crushed, while the0 true represcntatives of the couiity are the snpremo arbit,s of her for tulnes. Tho safety of the people depends solely on the disciplino and unaniui ty of th= Denocratic party. A united Demlocrncv nee;d fear no otdd1,3 hut dlissension'; within will in);ire external fu; w'' e.>1o and will se1'ius1.-ly eind:uig-er 1) )llest supremacy. 'Thlert) cal ho no objection to indi idual aspirations. Every man is cntiidod to posse -m honorable abiltion. Tho only danger hos in subordinating public good to individual aggrandizement. Every aspirant must be prepared to submit with good graeo to the verdict of the people. Sholul bo be inclined to kick out of the traces he must bo instant.l brought, to terms. We htvo 11:) fe.tr of this contingency. In our opinion, a bolt in Fairfield is an imoo. sibility in the neo.r future.
