While yonder in the porch there stands His wife, the lovely charmer The sweetest rose on all his lands The Independent Farmer. To him the spring comes dancingly, To him the summer blushes, The autumn smiles with yellow ray, With household angels round him. He trusts to God and loves his wife, Nor grief nor ill may harm her, He's nature's nobleman in life The Independent Farmer. KEEPING POULTRY IN ORCRARD. This is a matter that should be practiced when possible. We be lieve that if farmers and fruit raisers knew the benefit arising from such management, they would at once adopt it. Last fall we. visited an orchard in which fowls were kept, the owner of which told us that before the fowls were confined in it, the trees made little or no growth, and only a corresponding amount of fruit was obtained. But what a change was evident now. The grass was kept down, the weeds killed and the trees presented an appearance of tl;rift, which the most enthusias do horticulturist could not but admire and envy. The growth of the trees was most vigorous, and the oelinge remarkably luxuriant. The fruit was abundant, of large size and free from worms and other imperfections. This excellence was accounted for by the proprietor, who remarked that the "hens ate all the worms and curculio in their reach, even the canker worm." He found less trouble with their roost ing in trees than he expectod, and Sv that a picket fence six feet high kept thorn within bounds. His ~'..orchard wvas divided into three sections, and the fowls wore changed from one to another, as the condition~ of the fowls or the orchard section seemed to require. Nicholas immediately noised it abroad, and finally, in the year of grace 1878, it came to the ears of the Rev.
