The Brdokyn Tabernacle- Over Forty Thousand Dollars Subscribed in One Day--Earnest Exhortationa and Spir ited Responses. A man named Kimball, a commer cial 4raveler from the west, has achieled quite a reputation in the way of raising mortgages on church proporty, the amount, in some in, stances, reaching a hundred thous, and dollars. The Ne* York Heralt of the 17th inst. gites the following repqrtof the scene in Talmage's tabernacle on the day previous, which serves to illustrate the method of procedure. It saye : Ir. Talmage preaohed yesterday morning in the Brooklyn Tabernacle. It was the occasion of the ninth anniversary of the pastorate of Mr. Talgne, and the chproh was crowd ed. At:he close of the sermon Mr. Kimball, the cburch debt raiser, was introduced. Mr. Talpiage. tok his text from Psalms xxxv., 18-"I ywil4.give Thee thaie In the great congregation.' A pastor s anniversary sermon, said he, must of necessity 'be somewhat autobig r hical. Sitting in my Philadelphza study in 1869, a tele graph boy handed me a telegram from Brooklyn. It was a call to become.-pastor of a church which had gathered nineteen people at a congregational meeting. Contrary to the advice of my friends, and encouraged only by my chief adviser, who 'lives in tiy own house, I ac cepted the call, and for nine years have been gla of it.
