Our Monticello subscribers still complain that TnHE NEWS AND HERALD does not reach them. We can only repeat that we are perfectly sure the fault does not lie in in our office. Mr. Thos. W. Rabb, Sr., had the misfortune to lose his gin-house and contents by fire a few days ago. The loss is about $1000, with no insurance. The fire is believed to have been of incendiary origin. John Smith, the negro who bru tally murdered Bergen Conyer on the 28th ult., at Choster, was con victed last week, awl sentenced to be hung on the 1st of February. He has since mado a full confession. Mrs. John McDowell, wife of one of our worthiest and best known citizens, died on Tuesday last. Her remains were interred in the cometery of the Associate Reformed Church. The sympathy of the community is with her bereaved husband and kindred. FOUND DEAD.-On San lay last Rock Pearson, an aged colored man living on Mr. G. B. Pearson's place, was missed from home. Search was instituted, and he was found dead on Tuesday, in a ditch on the plantation. Trial Justice Evans, acting coroner, summinoned a jury, who rendered a verdict of death from accident. AL%RX oF FIRE.-An alarm of fire was sounded on Tuesday evening between 6 and 7 o'clock. It was caused by the burning of a chim ney of Brown's Hotel, which be came ignited accidentally. The fire, men were promnutly on hand, but their services were not called into requisition, as the fire was easily subdued without any damage being done. The Board of Examiners have com pleted their labors for the present, after arduous la.bors. Three days were devoted to the examination of colored applicants, and four to the examination of whites. About forty certificates have been issued, of different grades. Two teachers. Mr. R. Means Davis and Mr. Mat - thews, stood an examination before Superintendent Thompson, in Co lumbia, and received State certifi.. cates. The schools will go imme diately into operation, throughout the county. RwIGEWAY NOTEs.-A pound party was given to Rev. Mr. Watson, the new Methodist minister at this place, last Thursday night. It was quite a success. The sale of stock at auction is of common occurrence no'w, several head being sold Saturday. Ridgeway is not so far behind in the number of bales of cotton as was at first thought. Rev. Mr. Kennedy, of North Carolina, is in the neighborhood. He has preached twice at the Aim~ well Presbyterian Church. A GrgnEKD SoHoo.-The Trustees of thy free schools have rented Moun6 Zion College, and a graded school will be put into operation under Mr. Davis, as principal, and Misges Obear and B3laine as assis tants. The carpenters are actively en aged in fitting some outbuild in s in the college lot for additional el 4s rooms, and the school will sooI be opened. This is a venture; persons interested in education, it is hoped that it will Provo a sute - cess. The high school department of Mt. And children who thus spend the Sabbath, eventually fill our jails, penitentiary, and even worse places, and rob us, if in no other way, in taxes of the hard earned money we need for other purposes. Buy a carriage or buggy in which to take your families to church. Thousands of men and women have been saved from disgraco by the recollection of the prayers said at their mother's knee. The prosperity of carriage making is coequal with that of religion. When either declines, the other will, and you cannot keep the fire of religion burning in your hearts if you fail to assemble, especially on the Lord's day, to bear his life-giving word road and cxpounded. Get you a vehicle, of some kind, to convey you to church. For TaE NEIW AND HERALD. The Debating Society. The members of the Young Men's Debating Society again met on Fri day evening, renewe4 in body and mind, and determined to make it even a better organization than it has ever been before. The Society was formed in the fall of 1875, and continued almost uninterruptedly until last summer, when the members concluded to take a recess, feeling that by a short vacation thay could re-entor into the spirit of the thing with renewed zeal and earnestness; and the mAoting on Friday evening has fully proved that they were right in their conjectures. An ob server might see by their actions, and the interest that was taken in the proceedings, that every member was fully determined to do his whole share of the work, and in such a manner as,wvould mako him believe that the life of the society depended on him alone. Under such circumstances there will be no such word as fail. The society oc cupies one of tile most pleasant rooms in Masonic Hall, neatly fur, nished, nicely carpeted, and having a small library consisting mostly of standard historical works, which they intend taking steps to enlarge at an early day. Before adjourning, tihe regular quarterly election was held, resulting as follows : Presi dent, RI. MX. Huey ; Vice-.Presi dent, H. B. McMaster ; Secretary and Treas., T. W. Lauderdale.
