The Origin and Career of the Most Pro fitable Bank in Now York. A Now York letter says: "The death of John Jones, president of the Chemical Bank, which occurred on New Year's Day, recalls the early days of that remarkable in stitution. The Chemical Bank, the only one in the United States that did not suspend specie payment during the war, came into existence under somowhat peculiar circumstances. The charter under which it was organized was granted, not for a bank, but for a chemical manufac turing company. The intention of the parties who obtained the char-. ter was to start a bank, but owing to certain features of the banking law of the period (somewhere about fifty years ago) they could accom plish their purpose only by organiz ing for business purposes. The charter was obtained, the Chemical Manufacturing Company started, and in a short time the Chemical Bank was organized and doing business. The Manhattan Bank, another old institution, located in Wall street, was started in the samo way, the charter being issued in the name of the Manhattan Water Company. The Chemical Bank was a favorite among old merchants from the first, and the chara:iter of the men connected with i, soon, gave it a high position. When the war broke out and suspension be came the rule, the Chemical gave notice that it would continue to redeem its notes ir gold, as usual. As the outstanding notes woro but a trifle, the redemption was a simple and easy matter, but the more fact that the Chemical Bank continued to pay gold, in the face of universal suspension, made it famous throughout the country. So pros . perous did the bank become that with a capital of $300,000, it now has a surplus of over $1,000,000, and for several years past its stock has been quoted at $1,600 per share, or fifteen hundred per cent. above the original cost. Mr. Jones had been president thirty,three years, and was connected with tihe family of its founder, John Mason. He was a bachelor, and had been a commnuni cant in St. Paul's Episcopal church all his life." The Russian Journal of A rtillery states that an Austrian manufac turer has recently arrived at St. Petersburg, and has offered to sell to the Russian government tile secret of the fabrication of a new explosive; This substance, which is called "heracline," is, the invent or assorts, far sup)erior to either ordinary gunpowder or dynamite for blasting and mining purposes, and, when prepared in a special manner, may also he employed with advan tage as a bursting charge for shells. Used as a charge for mines, the new explosive is said to act with a much greater energy, and p)roduce a much greater effect, than the same quan-. tity of powder ; and, as both its density and cost of manufacture are considerably less, a saving of from 40 to 45 per cent. will be effected by employing it. It is also the least dangerous of any explosive, as it cannot be exploded either by a blow or by friction, but only by bringing a flame into contact with it in a closed vessel.
