The theatre was small and bare, wit' tiers of dingy wh;to-and--gold boxes rising to the ceiling, draped with curtains of fadod crins,n silk. The floor was covered with roagh wooden benches The drop-curtain represented an old Venetian noble accepting the dogo's cap at the hands of a deputation of senators in red, while knights in armor, rod robed councillors, fair women and young page.s stood around him. Into tho boxes caine young girls with faces tremulous with the fore thought of the music, and matrons with towers of hair and high-col ored silks flashing about them, and great waving fans in their hands. On the bonches about me sat tired work women with black veils drop - ping over their shoulders ; sturdy peasant girls with hand"kerchiefs knotted across their brows, or bare headed, with silver pins fastoning their braids. Whole families came trooping iii-kind-eyed fathers and mothers, with oranges tied up in their bluo handkerchiefs ; children who were sure to fall asleep between the acts, and, perchanco, with their drowsy cries, take all the pathos out of the "Miserero" itself. Groups of young men sauntered in-the pale artisans of the town, the swarthy sailors from the lagoons, tho wondering~eyed peasants from the mainland. They stamped their foot and cried out for the curtain to riso. Bet%% e mi-whiles they lmmned the airs of the opera. It was to them an old, loved friend No need of libretti for that audience. Not a gondolier but had plied his ear to the measure of Di Luna's love notes. Not a girl bending over her lace cushion high up in a garret window, but had dreamed herself a romance out of Leonora's passion cry. Not a lad from the inland vines but car ried his homesickness about his work in the gypsy woman's vision of her mountains. In front of me sat the choorful, smiling, woman, bareheaded. with long, gold ear-rings, of whom I was wont to buy old books, rare classics, for my intellectual recreation, and second-hand iron saucepans for the concoction of my dinner. Behind mo rose the shoggy gray head of the old man who sold salad at the doorway of the house. in which I lodged. I had many a time heard his mellow baritone ringing the length of the street in the "Con. spirators' Ohorus" of "E"rnaLni," and the "Liberta" of "I Puritamni." I knew that on the morrow the dingy passage would b)e glorified with the melodies of that evening. Near him sat the old woman who sewed mattresses for her living in the court-yard next door to mne. God pity these poor souls I The curse of ideality was on them all. They had come from their dark shops and sordid homes, drawnm by the hope of something better and purer than they could know in the dull round of their daily toil. They were waiting but for the signal to go out of their own weary lives into the old, sweet, thrilling romance of the troubadour. The members of the orchestra er opt, one after the other, through tho little door under the stage shabby old men, struggling for life and bread ; haggard young men, with genius written on their faces; little lads with precocious foreheads and dark, wild eyes. A familiar face appeared in the stage-box on the right. I recogni zed the old maestro, Grimani. The curtain rose, and soon the troubadour appeared, lifted his hel-. met, and cast from him his floating white mantle. 'What did it nmatter that he was old, and worn, and gray, and had lines of pain .on his face, under all the red and white of youth that had nought to do with his separation from Leonora I 'When he sang that impassioned love-song from his hiding-p~lace among the trees, how could his listenors know that the only thought upon him was of the faded wife waiting for him in some cheap lodging-house, and of the day, not far d.istant, whena hai voice would fail him altogether, and snatch tho bread from her mouth and his ? What did it care, that eager, sympathetic audience, that Leo nora's confidant was thin And con-. sumiptivo, and economized the rem nants of a voice that had long left its boesL days behind, and had a color in her face that made the stage paint a farco ? How could they know that perhaps thoro were six children to bo fod and clothed on the substance of that spectral voice and thoso hollow shoulders that mocked at the audience from their ghastly setting of wLito satin 7 But would they have cared had bhey known of those things ? I Joubt. There was too much of this soup pot struggle within the limits of their own experience to make thom heed it there where they had % right to expect only beauty and grace. They had come to the theatre to snatch a moment's res pite from sordid household care, ind why should they trouble them solves that the court ladies of Spain were jaded and weary, and sallow races and patient eyes and shivered - little when the cold air from the winds blew over their bare arms, or that the followers of Di Luna were rizzlod, and gaunt, and hard-fea. Aured ? Well for them that they should leel only the poetry and the pas iion of life for one short evening. But to me tho scene had a pitiful, Naniliar sadness. The young love ind the faded bodios-the romance )f the story and the dreary bread winning that lay behind itl-it was a ?athos but too well known to all trtists. INDEPENDENTS. The defeat of the Democracy in 3umter and Beaufort is having a Yholesomne effect in stirring up the Domocrats of other counties to enewed efforts at compact and effi -ient organization. Especially is ;his the case in Anderson ; and in Iis connection the Anderson Intel igencer very sensibly says: "This prompt action is the fore :unner of another successful canvass luring the present year, and should -eceive the hearty support of every Democrat in the county, and we a-ust that ore long every Primary ,ub in the county will have met, ,eorganized and gone to -work for .ictory. To perfect our organiza ion at this time is the wisest policy, or now men are cool and in the )Ossession of their full judgment, kud where they join together to orfect the reform begun at this itage of the canvass, they are more tpt to secure additions from the >pposite party than they could do 0fter the canvass has been opened md the party line closely drawn." This is true, aud it would be well ror the same course to be pursued tn every county of the State. There is another element of success, how Bver, which should not be overlook, ed, and which is fully as important as organization, and that is the nomination of capable and efficient men as candidates. Thiis is not only an important factor of success, but it is an imperative duty which the party owes to the public, and which it will not be safe to neglect. Organization may elect incompetent men, as we all know, but in that case success may be worse than defeat, for upon the party which elects them will fall all the odium of the crimes, and blunders wvorse than crimes, committed by feeble and incompe tent officers, either through igno. rance or the influence of evil coun sellors. Preferring their party to the State and country was the ruin of the Republican party, and the Democrats should take heed lest they commit the same fatal error. N'ews and (Jourier.
