They say Judge Carpenter is to be United Statos district attorney for.South Carolina, vice Stone, re signed. We publish in this issue the coml missioners' official return of the recent election. The figures will be found to vary but little from those given in our issue of Thursday. People say that it is impossible to hear the fire bell at anything like a reasonably long distaance. Persons at the freight depot did not hear it when it was sounded on Thursis-y afternoon. What is the difficulty? Professor Schmitt has re turned to Winnsboro, and is again ready to attend to the tuning and repairing of piauos, and to giving lessons on differont instruments. His stay will not be long. We omitted to mention in our last issue the game of base ball played on the Monday previous between the Chicoras, of Jackson's Creek, and the Nameless, of Winns boro. Having had no reporter present, we can give no full account of the game. The result was as follows: Chicoras, 15; Nameless, 19. The alarm of fire was sounded on Thursday afternoon. The flames nnd sparks from the furnace in Mr. A. F. Gooding's blacksmith shop came out at the top of the chimney, and some one gave the alarm. The fire companies' were promptly on hand, but their services were not required. We are informed that Capt. T. H. Clarke has been adlmitted to the bar in Camden. We wish him much success in his new profession. Mr. H. B. Flannigan, of Bear Creek, we are also informed, passed a very creditable examination at the same time and was also admitted. Hle has prosecuted his studies for some time. He has a plenty of pluck, and says lhe intends to make a name for himself. We wish him success too. Attention is directed to the pros pectus of a history of South Caroli-. na, published in another column. The author, Rev. Robert Lathan, a native of Fairfield and nowv a resi dent of Yorkville, is admirably fitted for the task he has undertaken, and we have no doubt it will be well per. formed. He has been for a long time engaged in gathering informna tion to be used in the work, and it will be both full and accurate. We trust the subscription list will grow rapidly. A POINT SETTLED.-The circum.. stances of the recent game of base ball between the .Nameless nine .of this place, and the first nine of the Columbia club are still fresh. With a view to a final seta tlement of the questions then raised, a communication was sent to the New York Clipper, ask ing information on the dispitted point. The Clipper, it' will be re mnembered, is recognized throttgh-~ ont the country n the highet an-. thority upon all such questions. The following is the inquiry made, with the Clijper's answer : A game of base ball was played between N. and 0. At the end of the fourth inning the score stood 27 to 3, in favor of N. At the beginning of the fifth inning N. allowed thom. selves to be put out, seeing that rain was imminent, and being anxious to complete a five-inning game. C. then refused to play, claiming un fairnoss in N. allowing themselves to be put out. Tho umpire called to the bat, and, no striker appearing, waited the proper timo, and then decided the gamo forfoited by C. If forfeited, by what score? How are bots ? ANSWER.-1. Tho nine refusirig to play forfeited by 9 to 0.-2. The backors of the 0. club lose. This decision settles the matter. Especially does it clearly vindicate the Nameless nine fromn the charge of "unfair playing," brought against them in the card of Mr. George K. Wright, the secretary of the Colum club, published in the Register. We must express our admiration of the course taken by the Nameless in re gard to Mr. Wright's card. Though charged, in severe and somewhat sarcastic terms, with "unfair plays ing," they quietly awaited the do, cision of the accepted authority. That decision has fully vindicated the propriety of their course, and complotoly repelled the charge brought against them. We ask the Register to publish the inquiry made of the CIpIer, together with the answer. Buiding and Loan Association.
