The town pump has been repaired and everybody in the neighborhood seems very glad of the fact A number of emigrants wore at the passenger depot on Thursday night, making ready for a start to Tennessee. So far as we have learned, nobody in Fairfield Juas yet paid taxes to the Chamberlain concern. No public notice has yet been given of the readiness of any person to receive such taces. A ptrty of wandering minstrels, consisting of a male violinist, a male harpist and a female violinist with a very good voice, attracted consideiable notie *Oi the streets on Thursday and Friday. Their music was unusually fine. The Register mentions that J. H. Runkle, formerly Solicitor in Judge Carpenter's circuit; committed sui cide on Thursday night by shooting himself through the head with a revolver. No cause is yet assigned fr the desperate deed. The newys from Washington was a surp~rise to everybodjy in town. Nobody belicved that the Commis, sion dwvould take the courno that now seems to be in its prograimmo. But most,. people think--and very justly tdo..-that 'there is a fine1 chance for Tilde~n yet. If a popular nwajority of a few hundred tihous and votes is worth anything, he cer.. tainly ought to be President. SERMON TO THE YOUNo.-The Rev. J. M. Todd, pantor of the Associate Reformed church, wvill deli' er a soermon to the young, by request of the Young Men's Christian Associa-. tion of Winnsboro, tormnorrow night, in the Method' church. There wyill be no services in the other churches. The public are invited to pttend. '7 A LIBERM,. This is a very favorable offer to farmers, as they will know when they buy the guano exactly the nungbpr of pounds of cotton requirord to pay for it, aig4 cali . in~ahe their calculations accordingly- Call on the local agents an~d forward your orders at once. Trial Justices Robertson and Har'vey wer@ engaged on a lhabeaa corps~ case on Thursday. The mother of a minor child prayed that the custody of the child b the latter was working, and given to herself. The gentleman claimed that he had hired the child from the rmother for the present year. The justices decided in favor of the mother, and the counsel on the op posite side took an appeal to the circuit court. Thon arnose the ques tion as to the custody of the child pending a final determination of the matter. The justices finally decid ed to legyo the child to her own choice, and she concluded to remain with her employer. All must regret the necessity for closing the public schools in Fair field, but it was in every sense prop er; for; the Board of Examiners to take suchi a course. The county has been flooded with unpaid certifi cates ever since 1868, and to increase the number of these would be slicer folly. It is better for all classes of the people to do without schooling for a year or two than to have the confusion in the school system made worse confounded by the issue of certificates when there is no money in the county treasury to pay thpn, THE STATE GRANGE.-The State Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry in South Carolina held its annual convention at Columbia on Wednes day last. About seventy Granges were represented. The proceed ings of the body were of course held with closed doors. The Register says : "The grange is dohg a vast deal of work. Their closed doors prevent our giving in detail a syn opsis of thgir labors. Their efforts we are told are mainly directed to steps tending to revivify the order in the State. Many practical schemes have been submitted for consideration, and gonqe of thorn placed in the hands of committees with instructions to have thern brought before the Legislature, to wit: A fence law,' an agricultural bureau, and a penalty for traflick ing in stolen products."
