SHOUT NEWS ITEMS OF LOCAL INTEIEST. EVENTS IN GAFFNEY AND CHER OKEE. Recent Happenings in and Around the City and Other Events Gath ered by the Local Newt Editor. The best cotton brought 8.85 on the Gaffney market yesterday. The Daniel Morgan Chapter of the D. A. R. will meet Wednesday, Jan uary 13th, at 3 o’clock, at the resi dence of Mrs. H. L. Spears. The postofflee receipts are steadily increasing, and if the same rafcio continues until July 1st Gaffney will be in a fair way to secure free de livery. There are rumors of several new enterprises to be established in Gaff ney soon, attracted here by the cheapness of electric power as com pared with steam. , “The Old Man” went “poking" off to the Ninety-nine Islands yesterday with a lot of local matter in his pock et which could have been very hand ily used in this issue of the paper. Mr. Lawrence G. Potter, the effi cient secretary of the Gaffney Manu facturing Co., has moved into the superintendent’s house near the Gaff ney Mills, where he will be much closer to his work. The cold wave which was sched uled to arrive Wednesday morning, came along that night twelve hours late. Evidently it traveled by way of the Southern’s Southeastern Ves tibule Limited. Mayor Ross had two colored wo men before him yesterday morning, both charged with disorderly con duct. He “gave” one ten dollars or thiity days, and dismissed the case against the other one. The many friends of Mr. Ralph Gaston will regret to learn of his re signation as ticket agent at the Southern depot. Mr. Gaston expects to leave for Cuba in a few days where he will join his brother, who is in the army. Lewis Waters, a colored sport from Inman, was before Mayor Ross Wednesday on the charge of ap propriating a pi&ol, the property of “Billy” Blanton, to his personal use. He got thirty days, and is now serv ing time. We are sorry to learn that num bers of people who killed hogs this season have lost their meat owing to the warm weather; some of the people who have killed very large hogs, however, have Informed us that the meat is all right. The Ledger man was astonished yesterday when he was Informed by one of our leading druggists that his concern alone spent seventy-five dol lars per months for coca-cola. This means something like $3,000 per year which the dealers in Gaffney pay out for this delicious drink. Chief W. W. Orr, of the Charlotte Fire Department, spent a few hours in the city Wednesday. Chief Orr came down to inspect our fire appa ratus. He pronounced it as being too advanced for our needs, saying that it was one of the most up-to- date machines in the country, fit for a city of 50,000 population. A. M. Whitesides, of York county, was on the streets of Gaffney Wed nesday exhibiting a unique attach ment by which a horse may be In stantly released from a buggy by pulling a string, although going at full speed. In addition to the release attachment another novel feature Is, that no traces are used, the harness being fastened to the shafts of the vehicle in such a manner as to dis pense with the use of traces. Messrs. Clary & Kirby, the local market men, are hustlers indeed. They are going to open a branch market at Ninety-Nine Islands. Mr. Ben Clary will have charge of this branch. Just as soon as Barney Clary learned that the contract for the dam had been let to Mr; Hard away he went to Georgia, where that gentleman lives, and made arrange ments to open this branch market. Barney does not wait for business, but goes after it. Gaffney needs a few more hustlers like Clary & Kirby. Service-Curry. Mr. J. R. Service and Miss Irene Curry stole a march on their friends and acquaintances on the last day of the old year by driving out the resi dence of Rev. A. D. Davidson, where they were united In the bonds of matrimony. “Bub,” as he Is called by his friends, is one of the most efficient and pop ular members of our splendid police force, while the bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Curry, and Is a very attractive and lovable young woman. Their large circle of friends wish them much happiness along the Jour ney of life, and the Ledger force, one and all, wish for them much pros perity. One of the most enthusiastic and Interesting meetings In the history of Gaffney’s Board of Trade was that held at the city hall Tuesday eve ning. There was hardly a dull mo ment from the time President Ham rick called the meeting to order un til the adjournment. Secretary J. C. Otts stated the object of the meet ing, which was to discuss sewerage, the C., C. & O. R. R., the advisability of requesting the Southern Railway to make Gaffney a regular stop for No. 37, and other matters of Interest to the town. E. H. DeCamp reported $40.10 left on hand from the fund to entertain the Press Association and moved that it be turned over to the treasur er of the Board of Trade, which was carried. Mr. J. A. Carroll was made chair man of the sewerage committee with power to select his own lieutenants. Mr. J. N. Lipscomb, speaking for the Board of Public Works, said the election would be ordered as soon as the legislature ratified the action of the electorate. Every man present expressed himself as in favor of sewerage and pledged his personal support to the movement. There can be no question but that the estab lishment of sewerage will be a great and good thing for Gaffney. Messrs. E. H. DeCamp, Nathan Littlejohn and L. Baker, were ap pointed a committee to get up the matter for a little folder advertising Gaffney. The committee has already gone to work on the folder. Resolutions were passed asking the Southern to make Gaffney a re gular stop for No. 37. Alw resolut ions tending to the Improvement of certain county roads. Ways and means to attract busi ness from Ninety-Nine Islands were also discussed. It was the consen sus of opinion if Gaffney wanted any of this business It would be proper for those business houses that wanted it to go after it, and not wait for the business to come to Gaffney voluntarily. In other words let those people understand we are glad to have them among us and that we want to do business with them.
