Pekin, Dec.. 2.—With all the ancient ceremonial that has grown around the throne of China in the course of cen turies the little three-year-old ruler of the MM-dle Kingdom, Pu Yi. was enthroned today. Mandarins and other officials, re splendent in the particolored jackets that mark their dignities, assembled here from all parts of the empire to give personal testimony to their loyal ty to the new regime. It had been understood that the ceremony of en thronement would be postponed until the latter part of January, on the Chi nese New Year’s day, when the era of the late Emperor Kwang Sen would have ended. Owing to the desire of the official class to have its status settled as soon as possible the cere monies were fixed for today’s date. All of the prominent Chinese whose names are known to foreigners were present at the ceremonies. Among them were Yuan Shi Kai, Prince Chung. Chang Chlh Tung and Chen Tung Liang Chang, former minister to the United States. Mining Congress in Pittsburg. Pittsburg, Dec. 2.—Delegates from all parts of the United States conven- •d here today in the opening session of the American mining congress. They were received with addresses of welcome by city officials, who dwell on the importance of the objects ot the congress. The purpose of the congress is the promotion of uniform state legislation relating to the mining Industry, the protection of the lives of mine work ers, the protection of investors in mine stocks and the prevention of un necessary waste. During the sessions of the congress addresses ou these and related topics will be delivered by prominent men, among whom James J. Hill, Edward H. Harrimau and John Hays Hammond are counted upon. One of the most interesting feature* of the congress will be the gathering on Friday of governors of states in which mining is an important indus try. Governor Stuart has sent invi tat ions to the governors of sixteen states, and many of them have sign! fled their intention of being present. Elberton Air Line Railroad Sold. Elberton, Ga., Dec. 2.—The Elber ton Air Line Railroad was sold yes terday at the court, house by Oommis sioner H. J. Rowe, of Athens, to Mr. H. V. Poor, of New York, for $581, 252.18. This was the only hid that was made. The road will he operated as an in dependent line between Elberton and Toccoa and will he reorganized in At lama tomorrow under the name of the Elberton Southern. Four Safes Blown Open by Robbers Troy, Ala., Dec. 2.—Four safes were blown open with dynamite and theii contents stolen by a gang of six rob hers about, ten miles south of here. Out of three of the safes the gang secured about $500 in cash, but found the fourth empty of valuables. Two negro witnesses to the robber ies won; bound and gagged, but not injured. The robbers escaped safely, and bloodhounds which were put on their trails soon lost it on a railroad track. The safes dynamited belonged tc Tatom & Son, Brantley Bros., Mat thews & Mott and .1. J. Kentucky Feud Resulted in Double Murder. Lexington, Ky., Dec. 2.—A sheriff s posse was searching the mountains in Lauurel county yesterday for VV11 Ham Tyree and Robert Barnes, who are charged with the murder last Sun day of William Barnes and Mrs. Em ma Taylor. The double murder was the result of a long-standing family feud between the Whitaker Mize and Barnes families, in which many peo ple have been slain on both sides. Memphis, Tenn., Dec. 2.—C. G. Cowle, formerly a well-known cotton buyer, and prominent in Memphis so cial business, was found dead with a bullet hole in his temple late this af ternoon. Cowle’s body was found in a locked room in his residence on Union avenue. The police declare R was a case of suicide.
