On Wednesday afternoon eight
fancy work enthusiasts met for the
purpose of organizing a club for the
exchanges of ideas in the art of
needle work. It was decided that
the club meet every Tuesday after
noon during the winter months and
should be called the “Tuesday After
noon Club.” The members are, Misses
j Lucy Carpenter, Pearl Crawley, Win
nie Davenport, Lula and Freeman
Garrett, Volina Hamrick, Cleo Little
and Jessie Lipscomb. The first meet
ing will be held at the home of Miss
T.ucy Carpenter on next Tuesday af
ternoon at three o’clock.

The management of the Star Thea

31st, the United States Indian Band,
the only band of full-blood, educated
Indians in the world. This famous
and celebrated concert Band of In
dian musicians is under the direction
of James Riley Wheelock, who is a
marvelous band leader. He was edu
cated at the Carlisle Indian School
1 and after graduation he studied In
1 Europe for several years and finished
his course under the baton of that'
celebrated English band master,
Mann. The World’s Fair official pro
gram says:
i “The engagement of Wheelock’s In-
, dian Band was one of the distinct
musical hits of the Exposition.”

Mr. C. B. Spake has purchased the
I valuable farm of Mr. John Spake,
about four miles south of ^Gaffney.

There were no sinners in Mayor
Ross’ court yesterday morning. Mr.
Ross is our authority for the state
ment that the number of cases for
the mayor has been reduced sixty
per cent since he went Into office.

Magistrate Bridges committed Will,
Hamrick to jail last Monday in do-;
fault of bond. Hamrick Is charged
with stealing a gun from his brother-
in-law and will have to answer to the
court of sessions, which convenes
next Monday.
Mr. F. M. Whiten, of Cherokee
Falls, caught t wo carp out of Broad j
river last Saturday which weighed |
j ten and eleven pounds each. He says
he did not get wet In an effort to
save his bate, as did Mr. Lee Little
a short while back.

Mr. Clarence Gray, the local ex- (
; press agent, has been on the sick
i list for several days with a light at-
J tack of yellow jaundice. Mr. Gray
is able to be about a little now, but
; not very much. The Ledger wishes
him a speedy recovery.

t Mr. J. A. Neal, a Gaffney boy, who
: is now located at Lockhart, visited
| relatives in the city last week. The
i Ledger understands that Mr. Neal is
! contemplating coming back to Gaff-
1 ney. He is a fine young fellow and

The city policemen are trying to
i break the young Americans from,
swinging and beating trains. One
boy was brought before Mayor Ross
yesterday and will spend ten days In
the lock-up, and several others will
be dealth with as soon as the “cops”
catch them.
The meeting of the Lodge His
torical Society at Limestone College
Wednesday evening was a delightful
occasion for the young folks. A large
crowd of Gaffney gallants were pres
ent and everybody had a good time.
The program arranged by the young
ladies was a capital oqe and was
splendidly carried out.
In addition to being one of the very
best police officers m the State,
Chief Lockhart, of the local throe,
has demonstrated that he la a good
farmer. He has just gathered from
less than seven-eights of an acre of
land sixty bushels of corn. The corn
was grown inside the corporate lim
its of Gaffney, and Mr. Lockhart pur-
sued the Williamson plan as nearly
as possible in the cultivation thereof.
