S. has been suffering with a rheumatic affection for several days but keeps up and going. Farmers have kept well up with their cotton picking. The bulk of it is now gathered and much of it gin ned—no 12,000,000 bale crop this year. If so somebody else Is raising Chero kee county’s quota of it. Mr. Sam Strain is having rye sown for winter pasture. Mr. C. W. Whisonant has made ar rangements to supply his customers with the best species of seed wheat. Calvin advocates the raising of more cereals and less cotton as a solution of the much talked of hard times problem and he has it about right, too. A few of our neighbors went to Gaffney yesterday to see the show. Of coourse the men only went to take the women and children—not that they cared anything for the sights—so they say. Mr. J. F. Wright, who has for a long time been suffering with cancer, is now very low and is living on mor phine. He can’t stand it much longer. Yesterday was a very dark day— smoky and dismal—so much so that it was compared to ‘‘Black Friday.” We have in our history a Black Mon day, Black Thursday, Black Friday and also Black Saturday, about each of which there Is a different super stition—all the forerunner of some great and disasterous event which gave them their different days. These we could speak of severeally did it not make our letter too long. But our readers must not conclude that we have authority to say they were without their sunlight. Superstition has always existed among weak minded. The colored people are having a series of “festibuls.” One of them posted this notice near his house: ‘‘A party at my house tonight. Come one, come all.” We think the Georgia people ought to have elected that candidate which made such a clear and comprehensive statement of his campaign expenses published In yesterday’s Ledger. We’ll venture to say«the man elected has no more business about him— though we know neither of them. But the best men are not always elected by any meanb. It tests the nerve of a man to kill his faithful dog—one that guards his home and property all night and pro tects his children against the intru sion of cattlq or other dogs or even strangers who come near them, even to prevent the spread of hydophobla. But any patriotic citizen will do it no matter what the loss may be to him and his family. One human life, though an humble one, is worth all the dogs in the country. We have advocated a tax on dogs sufficient to make the best of them an expensive luxury. Perhaps not more than one-half of them are re turned for taxation. It ought to be at least $2 per head with the severest penaDy for not making the returns. J. L. 8., Union and Townes counties, Georgia. Cattle from Fannie, Murry, Gilmore, White. Haversham. Cattle from counties of South Caro lina south of those mentioned cannot enter this quarantined area. If cattle are moved in violation of these regu lations. this will he direct violation of Federal or State regulations, and will be promtly prosecuted by Feder al or State authorities. Shipments of cattle have been stop ped at Toccoa, Ga., by Federal in spectors, and the railroad agents and owners of ferries should pay special attention to these regulations, as they are liable for all cattle which they accept in violation of these regulat ions.
