Kern's Son Paralyzed.
Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 15.—John
W. Kern, Jr., afflicted with what the
doctors term infantile paralysis. Is a
patient little sufferer at nis home.
When the boy was brought home from
Michigan recently he was unable to
move his arms or legs. He is now
gradually regaining the use of his
body. At no time has the sense of
twurfi been absent. The parents are
assured by the physicians that while
the boy's recovery will be slow, he
win eventually regain complete use
of bis limbs.

Opium Imports Declining.
Washington, Oct. 15.—That the
opium traffic in this country is ou the
decline le indicated by the latest fig
ures compiled by the bureau of stalls,
ties showing that opium imports have
been decreased by onesiuarter of a
minion tjollara during 1908 as corn-
fared with the previous year. Thus
far in the year the Chinese empire
fcas supplied this country with 1.322.-
*91 worth of opium while from else
where the opium imports amount to
only *14.-012.

New Teak. Ort. 15.—The first
message from Dr. Frederick K. Cook,
the arctic explorer, since he started
for the pole from a point north of
Blah on Psbruary 2l*th last, has been
received to this city and was brought
heie by Rutiolpb Frankt. who accorr
panied Dr. Obok on the early stage of
his journey.
The message was written on March
17th last. It was dated "Polar,
Sea, North of Camp Huh bard,” and
i said that up to that point everything
had pone very well, aknnugb the 1
weather was extremely cold. He was
1 making a straight line for the pole at
; that time, be said, and orpected to
1 be baok at the base l^te in May. Dr.
Cook did jiot reach the base before
