Recent Happenings in and Around the City and Other Events Gath ered by the Local News Editor. Business men report a fair busi ness last Saturday. Beginning Thursday, October 15th, the library hours will be from 3 to 5 o’clock. Cotton sold the local market yes terday at 8:75, being a little better than the price paid Saturday. The Woman’s Club will meet Wed nesday afternoon instead of Thurs day at the home of Mrs. W. F. Humphries. Workmen are engaged in repaint ing and otherwise improving the ap pearance of the Merchants and Planters Bank. County Superintendent of Kduca- tion J. L. Walker, was summoned to Union Friday on account of the death of his aunt, Mrs. S. C. Walker. Rev. W. T. Thompson preached the funeral of the late Adam Crocker at Bethesda church, in Spartanburg county, last Sunday at 11 o’clock. The remains of Mrs. Sallie Walk er, who died in Union last week, were interred at Skull Shoal Baptist Church, in this county, last Saturday. Tomorrow night Dr. J. B. Haw thorne will occupy the pulpit of the First Baptist church. He is one of the leading preachers of the South ern Baptist church. The little three-yeaT-old daugMer of Mr. Moses Moore died last Thurs day morning of pneumonia. The bur ial took place Friday at Hopewell church. Services were conducted by Rev. B. L. Hoke, of Blacksburg. Mr. Moses and Mr. A. N. Wood left yesterday for Pacolet, where they go to see their father, Mr. James Wood, who is not xpected to live a great while. Mr. Wood is ninety-six years of age and has enjoyed remark ably good health until the past few months. Carrie White, a respectable color ed woman of this city, died Friday night after a lingering illness. Car rie had spent several years in New York city, where she contracted tuberculosis. Some months ago she returned to Gaffney and has been steadily declining until the end came Friday. Mr. S. B. Vassey, of the Thickety section, was a pleasant caller at The Ledger office Fridgy. Mr. Vassey has just returneu from a visit to the State University where he .»as two brotners who won scholarships, one from the county and one at large. Keep an eye on Cherokee boys. They are winners. Magistrate B. F. Camp, who had the misfortune to break his leg several months ago and who had just about recovered from the Injury* had the ill luck to fall again last Satur day and break the same leg again. He will be confined to his home for some time now, but his friends will wish for him a speedy recovery. The National Bank of Gaffney and the Gaffney Savings Bank believe in publicity, consequently they expend more money for newspaper space than most banks. If the remarks of the officials are any critrian they are well pleased with the results. Cer tain It Is that their advertisements are attractively worded and attract ively arranged. Mrs, W. C. Carpenter, who has been visiting in Barnwell, Columbia and Spartanburg, returned to the city last Thursday night. We clip the following from the Barnwell People: "Mrs. W. C. Carpenter has returned to her home In Gaffney af ter a short visit here to her sister, Mrs. J. A. Willis. Mrs. Carpenter was the guest of honor at many so cial functions while here in Barn well.” There will be a public meeting of the Lodge Historical Club in the Limestone auditorium on Wednesday evening. October 21st. An attractive programme has been arranged and the most attractive feature will be the beautiful, charming and fascinat ing young ladies of the college. The dummy will run free of charge and the entertainment will be free of charge. The public is cordially Invit ed to be present. There will be a reception immediately after the ren dition of the programme. Considerable excitement was creat ed yesterday morning by the dis covery of a bundle of bloody clothes under a car In the rear of J. W. Tol- leson’s store, and speculation was rife until It was learned that Dr. Pit man had performed an operation on Luther Suggs for a minor trouble, that he had left Suggs in his office and while he was away Suggs haA departed with the bloody clothes and disposed of them by throwing them under the car. Kersosene oil was poured over the clothing and a match applied, this disposing of the un sightly things. Sunday was exceptionally bright and beautiful and the congregation at Buford Street M. E. church unu sually large. The morning service consisted of baptism and reception Into the church of several young people. The remarks of the pastor were happily appropriate to the oc casion and the ceremony very im pressive. An arrangement of one of Abt’s songs for solo and chorus com prised the special music. At night Rev. Harper’s dlscuslon was on the suject of blind Bartimeus and les son to be drawn from the same. While Dr. Conley, of Woodruff, and Miss Stancel, one of the teach ers of the city school, were out driv ing Sunday afternoon the horse be* came frightened at an automobile. The young folks got out of the buggy and drove the horse to one side of the road and as Mr. Walter Baker, who was driving the auto, attempted to pass, the horse broke loose and ran away, demolishing the buggy. The accident occurred near Mr. T. G. McCraw’s home beyond Provi dence church. The young people were brought to the city In Mr. Fite’s machine, he being near the scene of the trouble at the time. ‘ Henry Bolls, a well known and respected colored man, died at his home in this city, near Limestone, last Saturday, after a few weeks ill ness. Henry was one of the beat known and best liked colored men In this town. For years he was In the employ o fthe Limestone Springs Lime Co., but for the past several years had been engaged in railroad bridge building. He was thirty-seven years of age. He leaves a wife and three children. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon from Lime stone (colored) Baptist church, Rev. A. A. Simms officiating* He was buried with Masonic rites. Several w-hite people attended the funeral. Converse’s Delegation. Converse sent over a large dele gation yesterday afternoon to attend the local K. of P. meeting last night. There were two candidates for the second degree and the boys from Converse had their fun. The follow ing were the good fellows present: Messrs. S. M. Smith, J. A. Bender, J. B. Williams, W. H. C. Hundley. Come again, boys. We are always glad to have you with us. Death of Mrs. 8. J. Ramsey. Mrs. S. J. Ramsey died at her home in the eastern section of the city yesterday morning about 8 o’clock. Deceased was about sixty years of age. She leaves a husband, three children and a large number of grandchildren and other relatives to mourn their loss.
