Tonight at half-past eight the Third Quarterly Conference of the Buford Street M. E. chun h will be held in the Sunday school room. All officials are requested to be present. On next Thursday. August 13th. the J Broad River Association will meet in i this city. A good meeting is expect ed. Let everybody remember the j date. Rev. W. T. Thompson, of Gaffney, j and the Rev. Dr. Simms, of Marlboro. N. C„ are conducting a meeting at Elbethel. Reports from the meeting indicate a gracious gathering and i much good being accomplished. During the electrical storm Tues day afternoon, lightning struck one of the poles over the city artesian well, tearing it nearly to pieces. On Wednesday afternoon, lightning struck the arc light at the junction of Stable and Limestone streets, break ing the lamp into fragments. There will be an all day singing at Mt. Ararat church on next Sunday, August 9th, beginning at 10:36 o’clock. Mr. Joe W. Humphries’ sing ing school choir will be cordially In vited to attend and the public Is In vited to attend with well filled baskets. This will be a religious song service and the public Is Invited to take part. On Saturday Sheriff Thomas was notified that a still was in operation over in the King's Creek neighbor hood, in this county. He proceeded to the place, accompanied by Deputy Paul Lipscomb, and found the site of a distillery of considerable capacity which had been in operation, but the fixtures and supplies had been torn out and carried away. The sheriff thinks that this had been done about a week before. Attempted Jail Delivery. On Tuesday at about 12 o’clock while Deputy Henry Lockhart was at the county jail giving the prisoners their dinner, one of them aMacken him and tried to get possession of his j revolver in order to make his escape. ■ The other prisoners then made a i dash for liberty but when they had* gotten down stairs, they found the front door fastened. Mr. Lockhart soon overcame his antagonist and went down stairs and carried them back again to their cells. No one was hurt, however. In the difficulty. | Church Notts. Wednesday morning Magistrate Bridges was engaged in trying Junius Sparks, white, against Elsie Jefferies, colored.
