Linen Frocks at Newport; Silk
Linen Tailor Gowns.
The hard times seem to have no
effect on the vagaries of fashion, for
gowns are more luxurious this sum
mer than they ever were before, and
at all famous watering plates of the
Eeast, especially Newport and Bar
Harbor the costumes worn add great
brilliancy to the season.
In every fashionable society the
Directoire styles are literally carry
ing everything before them. Skirts
are very long and clinging and waists
are short.
One of the ladies, a spectator at the
games at the tennis court at the
Casino in Newport, the other day
wore a stunning creation of pale pink
linen, that must have come straight
from Paris.
or linen worn with a loose or semi-
tin ing jacket of colored silk either
iu the new cerise shade, green, cop
per color or nattier blue. These lit
tle jackets are finished with big but
tons of the silk or immense plain
white flat pearl buttons. They are
undeniably smart and are worn a
great deal for driving.
Green parasols seem to have struck
the fancy of the fashionable women
this summer. They are of all shades
from a regular olive tint to the vivid
bottle green tone and are usually
(|uite plain, though occasionally a
narrow border of graduated tucks is
,seen.
Yachting Suits.

red and green plaid are worn with
dark blue and black suits.
Modish Jewelry.
The jewelry worn at Newport this
summer indicates that there is at
present a great vogue for pearls—very
large pearl earrings are seen and al
so pendant or drop earrings. The
flat variety of Baroque pearls are put |
to many uses and are embodied in |
necklaces, ornaments for the front of ^
the corsage, scarf pins and swung on
tiny chains over the collar in the ever j
graceful “La Yalliere”. In fact there;
is nothing quite so pretty in the way i
of summer jewelry as these pearls as!

Weekly Weather Bulletin.
Weather bulletin for the week end-
, ing July fi, 190R.
The temperatures were favorable,
I the mid-day heat having been mode-
rato and the nights warm; the pre-
oipitation was generally ample, with
excessive amounts locally in all sec-
1 tions: and the sunshine generally de-
fieient. the percentage of cloudiness
having been unusually high during
the latter half ol the week.
The weekly mean temperature was
above the normal on the coast and
! below the normal in the interior the
I departures being small in both divi-
1 sions. The weekly extremes were 59
degrees at Trial on June 30th, and 95
; degrees at Spartanburg on June 29th.
The rainfall was generally normal,
j or above, and in places was heavy
i (hiring the last half of the week.
Amounts exceeding two inches were
common in all sections, and in the ex-
j trente northwestern portion the week-
i ly amounts ranged from 4 to over 5
| inches, washing lands and flooding
1 lowlands. Marked deficiencies occur
red on the central coast, especially in
| Charleston county, and in the lower
i Wateree valley.

This gown had a long trailing skirt,
' trimmed at the knees with a twelve
! inch band of embroidery done on the
material with linen thread and tiny
white linen braids. It had a Direc
toire coat with the customary short
waisted effect in the front and rather
long tails in the back. The coat was
trimmed with embroidery matching
the garniture of the skirt. The
| sleeves were of three-quarter length
1 and adorned with broad bands of the
| embroidery.
Another handsome frock, seen at
rhe same place, was of natural color-
{efl pongee made In a tight Empire
j style and trimmed with broad vertl-
j cal bands of ecru silk lace, through
i which one could catch distracting
i glimpses of a pale blue silk lining.
■ With this dress pale blue silk stock-
; ings and matching shoes were worn
' and on the head a pale blue straw
hat with a long blue plume. The par-
| a sol also was of tucked blue saffeta.
Silk Jackets and Linen Skirts.
Y^ry smart and pretty are the new
costumes in tailor effect made with
a short pleated skirt of serge pique
in order to be correct.. Very hand
some ones are made in white serge
with the regulation sailor blouse with
an embroidered shield piece and a
bright red silk tie. Of course sulfa
of blue serge are used also.
THE
Of late years, instead of the cus
tomary yachting suit there has grad
ually grown us a fashion of wearing
tailor suits of serge or panama—that
is coat and skirt suits for this pur-
pose. With these are worn either a
silk or linen shirt waist made in se
vere tailored style. For yachting
white or tan shoes are usually worn,
white with the white suits and tan
with all other colors.
Modish Bathing Suits.
Bathing suits are more becoming
this year than ever was the case be
fore. The very newest fad is to have
them made in princess style and fit
ted closely to the figure and of course
'his necessitates wearing a bathing
corset. The smartest bathing suits
are made of taffeta but very pretty
ones are also seen in mohair of va
rious colors.
