The Splendid Reception at Asheville
and the Battery Park, at Hender
sonville and Toxaway.
After a most delightful trip into
the mountains of North Carolina with
the Press Association we are at home
again realizing more than ever our
utter insignificance, after viewing
the mighty works of nature iti what
has been most litly termed “the laud
of the sky.’’ The party some fifty
strong, left Gaffney at 15:30 a. m. Fri
day morning arriving at Marion, N.
C. ( at 10:30. At this point our “spe-
cial’’ was transferred to the Western
North Carolina railroad going direct
to Asheville.
Heiween Marion and Asheville the
scenery is grand, mountains rising on

A Beautiful Game With a Heart-Dis
ease Finish.
Tin home team again defeated j
Tin apau Tuesday by a score of 2 to
!. It svas one of the prettiest games
seen on the home grounds this sea
son. Wood, for the home team, was
in line form stricking out twelve men
and yielded only two hits. Trammel,
for the visitors, was also in good form
and only really yielded one hit. In
the third inning Maxwell scored the
lirst run for Gaffney, and the fans
went wild. In the next inning, how
ever. a damper was put on their en-
thusiasm when Turner, for the visi
tors. crossed the plate tieing the
score. Neither team scored again un
til the last half of the ninth, when
Curry scored on a beautiful sacrifice,
winning the game. The Tucapau
team is at Blacksburg for two games.

At 11 o’clock a. m. we left Ashe

the Wheeler Hotel for dinner. The
Wheeler is a splendid structure situat

view may he seen. Mr. Wheeler

party at dinner and tendered a tide
to the party around the city. After
a most delightful drive maned to
some extent by a shower, the party
started for Lake Toxaway at 4 o’clock.
Hendersonville is 2.100 feet alntve

miles from this point is a thousand
feet higher and is one of the most
delightful spots in America. Moun
tain peaks innumerable rise to lofty
heights, and between them mammoth
gorges eut their way. carrying with
them sparkling streams forming
waterfalls of rare beauty and fasci
nation and which are alive with
mountain trout, that toothsome deii-
eacy so dear to the heart of the
epicure.
The hotel is under the manage
ment of the Toxaway Inn Company
and is a splendid building. The
rooms are large and light and can o»
had single or en suite. The ToxAway
Inn Company was organized by Mr.
C. A. Wood, of Boston, Mass., who is
its president and Is one of the most
noted hotel men In America He has

Gerard Lipscomb is one of the fin

His work Tuesday was better than
we have seen in many league games.
Boys, you are now in a position to
challenge any amateur team in either
North or South Carolina, and to
wallop them too. You are playing a
great game these days.
Belue and Wood are both splendid
twirlers. and the best part of it is
that neither of them lose their heads
but are always in the game un’il the
finish.
The knockers will now take a back
seat. Two games from the strong
Tmapau aggregation is something o?
which to be proud and shows that the
boys are playing well together.
The only home run that was scored
m Tuesday’s game was the one uiaJ •!
by Dr. Gunter's horse. Many of the
fans are of the opinion that the hors
v.;is entitled to the shoes.
Both Hie prizes went to Bldcksburg
players. The home boys, iowever,
lire not jealous, because Blacksburg
belongs to us and bi,:h Ward and
.Maxwell are splendi 1 feMows and
-•> " ball players.
Tom Brown is a splendid umpire,
bat he Is so afraid of doing ttyi vMI
in- teams injustice that it would

shade the best of It. Everybody
knows that Tom means to be abso
lutely fair howp\er, and It is a. big

I visiting team lias ever said that our
umpire was unfair to them.
