In another heart disease game at the new park Wednesday afternoon Gaffney defeated Blacksburg In a heart-rending game by a score of 2 to 1. Gaffney made two runs the first inning and had the boys from across the Broad shut out until the ninth Inning when they made one. This was a trifle irregular and if the regular run of events had occurred It is doubtful if they would have cross ed the rubber at all. Byars, the first man up in the ninth for Blacksburg, hit over ,hort for one base, this be ing the ; econd hit secured on Wood in two games. Ward then strucx out and Byars wa s caught napping oft second and declared out by Manager Ross of the Blacksburg club, who was umpiring. This raised a kick from the Blacksburg players but Bird came to bat and hit through short for one base. It was then Belue’s time at bat, but he refused to bat on ac count of his manager’s decision at second base. Blacksburg only had one substitute along and as he was already in the game on account of in jury to a player earlier in the game they had no one to bat in Belue’s place. On this account Gaffney al lowed Blalock, who was next In the batting order to Belue to take bis turn at bat. Blalock cracked out a two base hit scoring Bird and making things look squally for only one more run was needed to tie the score and with a man on second, things looked dangerous indeed. Maxwell ended the agony by hitting to Robbins at third and going out at first. The fea tures of the game was the pitching or Wood and Belue, the beautiful work of Gaffney’s infield, and sensational catches by Blalock and Byars for Blacksburg. Gaffney played an error less gatne. In the last three games pitched by Wood he has been score on only once. Has allowed one bit no hits and four hits, in the last two games the Gaffney club has made only one error. The box score: BUNTS AND SINGLES. Wood is certainly a wizard. Pitch ing a no hit game against the strong Cowpens aggregation, Is an achieve ment worthy of special mention, o o o Mr. Routh, the ex-leaguer, who came over to show the boys how It is done, certainly got his bumps in the game Tuesday. Wood has him skinned four city blocks. o o o Robbins is a great third sacker. He played the position perfectly in the game Tuesday. o o o The Cowpens boys are a gentle manly set, and accepted their defeat Tuesday in a graceful manner, o o o Lipscomb's work behind the bat was first class in the Cowpens game. To hold Wood for nine innings with out having a passed ball is good work. o o o Bell started the fine work in the Cowpens game Tuesday by a clean single to right center, and scored the first run of the game. After this they all landed on Mr. Routh. o o o The fence Is almost compiled, and it is to be hoped that the stand will be up this week in order that the garm's may be seen in some comfort, o o o PROGRESS OF DEATH. Sensations of One Overtaken by the “Sleep of Snow.” Pastor Bertrand was climbing a mountain with a party of students. Feeling tired, he lay down to rest while the others proceeded and was overtaken by the “sleep of snow.” He felt himself as if struck by apoplexy.
