We never could understand bow some people could get any satisfaction out of indulging in this most obnoxious habit. That it is a habit is evidenced by the fact that you never hear them say anything good about any person. If you make the assertion in their presence, that Sam Jones is a good fellow, they will qualify your estimate by mentioning some fault which poor Sam has that you had never thought of, and which you were perfectly willing to overlook or condone. There are a number of these individuals in our city, and we deeply deplore the fact that they will be here as long a s time shall last, because the breed Will never become extinct, but like the greeii bay tree, will continue to flourish, and like the deadly Upas will continue to distribute bis poison to willing ears. These lines are not written in the hope that it will cause the scandal-monger to cease his ne farious practices, because nothing but death or loss of speech would have that effect, but in order to get in his slimy work he must have a listener and perhaps some one who reads these lines will close his ears and refuse to listen when next the scandal-monger comes his way.
