The Orangeburg city council has

The new Presbyterian church at
Glenn Springs *is nearing completion
and will be dedicated on the third
Sunday in June.
The town of Jonesville is to build
a new school building. The corner
stone will be laid with Masonic cere
monies on Monday, June 8.
The Glenn Springs hotel, which is
now under the management of A.
Schilleter, of Clemson College, was
opened for the season Monday.
A horse belonging to Wade Hamp
ton Sellers, the blind tiger Ling of
Columbia, ran away, knocking down
and painfully bruising G. M. Berry,
cashier of the National Loan and Ex
change bank.
Mrs. W- D. Boyd died at her home,
near Goldville. Mrs. Boyd was the
sister of'Mr. W. H. Wallace, editor of
the Newberry Observer, and is sur
vived by her husband, two daughters
and four sons.
County Treasurer H. .1. Southern,
of Greenville county, has announced
that he will not be a candidate for re-
election, but at the expiration of his
term of office he will go with the new
national bank recently organized in
Greenville.

so burned. Mr. Dyches’ loss is esti
mated at between $4,000 and $o,000,
with $2,700 insurance.
Jesse K.. the seven-year-old child
of Mr. and Mrs. H- W. palmer, of Ben-
nettsville. fractured his skull falling
off a gate, striking his head on a
brick. An operation was performed
by Dr. A. S. Townsend, assisted by
Drs. Carmichael and Faison, which
was seemingly very successful.

Mr. Hugh Quarles, of Trenton, was
playing with his pet dog. The dog
bit him on the hand and then bit
his little daughter, Leila. The dog ,,
then showed plainly that it was mad.
It got away from Mr. Quarles and
went to Mr. Cator’s house, biting his
daughter and a little girl who was
with her.
Win. Wisher, of King's Creek, who
wishes everybody well, was in town |
last Saturday.
Rev. J. L. Harley, Superintendent
of the Anti-Saloon League for South
Carolina, with headquarters in Green
ville. spent Wednesday night with
Rev. S. B. Harper. Mr. Harley was
here arranging for a series of pro
hibition meetings to be held on the
second Sunday in June at the various
churches of the city.
“Uncle" Jimmie Strain, of Wdlkins-
ville, paid The Ledger an appreciated
call yesterday.
Major John F. Jones, of Blacksburg,
was in the city last Friday.
M. M. Freeman, formerly of Blacks
burg, but now at Clairmont, N. Hm
was in the city last Friday.
Mrs. S. R. Suiter and children left
Tuesday for Greenville, to visit
friends. Thev will return next week.

The dispensary winding up com-

by the "general assembly from the
dispensary funds for the prosecution
of persons connected with the admin
istration of the late State dispensary.
This sum is paid by order of the su
preme court and by permission of the
federal court, which has enjoined all
thej-est of the dispensary funds.
Fire (guupletely destroy the dwel
ling and jewelry store of Mr. W. T.
Johns and the offices of Messrs. Jas.
\V*. Moore and Dr. R. C. Williams at
Hampton. The fire originated in the
kitchen of Mr. John’s residence and
quickly spread to the other buildings.
The office of Senator W. S. Smith was
saved after a hard fight. All the
buildings were partly insured, except
that of Dr. R. C- Williams, which was
a complete loss.

Fire m Gaffney.
A house on North Liniestone street,
belonging to Mrs. N. M. Gettys, was
partially destroyed by fire Wednes-
d^" between eleven and twelve
o’clock. The house was occupied by
Robert Burgess and Garfield Hall
man with families. Mrs. Burgess
was in the kitchen preparing dinner,
and it is supposed that the roof
caught from the stove flue. The
fire department was soon on the
ground and extinguished the fire be
fore the house was entirely destroy
ed. Messrs. Burgess and Hallman
saved all their belongings which were
in the house, but some of the kitchen
furniture was lost. There was no in
surance on either building or con
tents.
Death of Mrs. Elizabeth Cannon.
Mr. M. V. Fitzgerald was called to
Converse Tuesday on account of the
death of his sister, Mrs. Elizabeth
Cannon. Mrs. Cannon was the wife of
Mr. J. G. Cannon. She was In her
sixty-first year. Her husband and
seven children are left to mourn their
loss. The interment was at Cannon’s
Camp Ground Wednesday.
“Brothe r Josiah” Coming.
A roaring farce comedy, “Brother
Josiah," will be given at the opera
house on the night of June 29th by
local talent. The play is full of
comical situations and awkward
episodes, and it is safe to say that
there will not be a dull moment from
the rising to the falling of the curtain.

Death of An Infant.
The infant daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. A. C. Moore died Wednesday
morning at 3 o’clock. The little suf
ferer was only six months old, but
had lived long enough for its loss to
be deeply felt by its parents, who hal
the heartfelt sympathy of a large cir
cle of friends. The interment took
place Wednesday afternoon at Blacks
burg. ’
