While Mr. A. S. Lipscomb was out
driving Friday afternoon, his horse
took fright and ran away, throwing
him from the buggy, painfully injur
ing him and demolishing the vehicle.
While Mr. Lipscomb's injuries were
painful, they are not at all serious.
The District Convention of Knights
of Pythias was held with the Clifton
lodge last Friday. The meeting wa*
a splendid one, and w r as much enjoy
ed by all who attended. Dr. W. K.
Gunter, H. S. Drummond and Ed H.

are loud in praise of the treatment
accorded them.

takes place. These lots are in the
most desirable residence section of

ago for the purpose of purchasing
horses. The animals arrived Sunday
night. The shipment consisted of

About three weeks ago Mr. S. L.
Fcwler, of the Ravenna section, was
bitten slightly by a dog which recent
ly showed symptoms of being afflicted
with hydrophobia. Mr. Fowler be
ing apprehensive of serious results
after the dog had shown symptoms
of rabies, came to Gaffney on Thurs
day to have Mr. Lowe’s madstone
applied to the wound, but the stone
failed to stick. The bite was very
slight, and it is to be hoped that Mr.
Fowler will experience no inconven
ience thereform.
Mayor Ross held a rather interest
ing matinee Saturday morning. Wil
liam Henry Manning, a well known
colored local sport became too bois
terously convicial and was sentenced
to pay a fine of $10 or serve thirty
days. Lije Brown, who has figured
more or less prominently In the m«-
niclpal court for some time, was dis
charged. A colored Amazon, named
Mary Jeter, was fined $25 or thirty
days on the streets. This lady hav-
idg more time than money, preferred
the streets.
The city council has threatened re
peatedly to have the beautiful little
city park cleaned off, but there Is
“nothing doing” yet. When It would
cost so little It looks as If the coun
cil might beautify this little spot,
which is not only a source of pride,
but is a source of so much pleasure
to the people of the town. If there
is one thing that Is demanded by the
people It Is that the park be kept in
condition and it does seem that the
city council would have the grace to
do a little thing like this, especially
as they are being severely criticized
for not doing so.
Friday morning an aggregation of
“kids” from Charlotte came to Gaff
ney and in the afternoon on the
grounds at Limestone, they walloped
the locals to the tune of thirty or
fcrty to about nine. The scorer ex
hausted his paper and guessed at the
score< It was a very poor exhibition,
onfi the heavy score against the home
toys is accounted for by reason of the
fact that have had no practice since
last season. The Charlotte boys re
turned home Friday night very much
elated over their victory. We hope
that the locals will get some practice
before they try to play again.

Sugar For Wounds.
Powdered sugar has long figured
among the means employed for dress
ing small superficial wounds, but a
German surgeon has employed it ad
vantageously on recent wounds and in
particular on surgical wounds. For
this purpose he uses granulated sugar
which has been first sterilized at 140
degrees C. and to which 2 per cent of
salicylic acid has been added.
Sprinkled abundantly with this mix
ture. the wounds are quickly covered
with granulations of an excellent ap
pearance and are not long in closing.
When it is a question of deep or jag
ged wounds, which require draining,
the German surgeon introduces into
the gutta percha drains cylindrical
sticks sawed out of a sugar loaf and
then filed round, which have been
soaked for several months in absolute
alcohol salicylated at 2 per cent.
Sugar dressing is counter indicated
in presence of foul, suppurating
wounds or those with a tendency to
hemorrhage. It must also be employed
only with precaution when there ex
ists a denuded osseous surface, the
strong drying effect of the powder be
ing capable in these cases of producing
necrosis.

Can Eczema Jbe cured?
Some physicians say “Yes.”
Some say “No.”
The real question is, “What la
meant by Eczema?” If you mean
those scaly eruptions, those diseases
which make their first appearance,
not at birth, but year afterward, and
perhaps not until middle age—then
there can no longer be any question
that these forms of Eczema are
curable.
