It has been decided to postpone the ! concert by Mr. boring and Miss Hlg- ! ley Indefinitely, on account of the un- 1 usual number of other musical events i which will soon, take place at the col lege. Miss Ixmlie Potter will give her ! graduation recital on Friday night, i January seventeenth. The public is 1 cordially invited to attend. Several new students have entered the music department of he college since the Christmas holidays, among , these being Miss • Stella Waters and Miss Marie Foxworth. Rehearsals are in progress by the ! Choral Club for the music to be sung at the spring Festival. It seems that ! we are now comparatively certain of having the festival. There is much i interest in the affair among the peo ple of Gaffney, an,] the organ will be erected in ample time. The success of this undertaking depends upon the residents of Gaffney, and it is hoped that they see the many advantages that a two or three day festival of music would present. The following letter has been sent to each student who is a candidate for graduation from the music depart ment this year. As soon as the date of examination is decided it will be announced in The Ledger, and the public is invited to attend. Limestone College, Director’s Studio. Jan. 9th, 1908. Dear Miss We shall soon hold a public exami nation for the purpose of ascertain ing the standing of such of our stu dents as are candidates for gradua tion from our music department this year. We have given the matter our con- I sideration, an,] have decided to noti fy each student of the examination ip ample time to allow opportunity for a careful preparation. The affair will he held in the college auditorium, and the student body an,] the literary faculty will he invited to attend. In vitations will also he Sent to the pa rents of the students to he examined. The test will begin by having the student play two piano solo works, to be selected by the director. These solos will he selected at random from the pieces studied during the : present college year and students must bring a complete record of pieces studied, from which the se lection will be made. The second part of the test will he a careful and rigid hearing of the ability of the student to read at sight. This.'after all, is the most important branch of the study of music, since to become acquainted with the stand- | ard classics, we must possess the abil ity to read such works. The student i will be required to read one solo at . sight, and two or more accompani- j ments to songs, violin solos, or to a i piano concerto. Each student will be required to play two Cramer etudes. These may be selected by r the student. They must be played up to the metronome mark as indicated in the bool:. A test will he given in ear training and In theorv of music. Bach student will be required to talk for from theee to five minutes on the life and works of one of the following composers: • Beethoven, Mozart, Schuman, Schubert or Cho pin. Ability to play with the metronome, especially all the major and minor scales, will be a feature of the test. Yours very truly, Harold A. Loring, Director of Music. Along Cherokee R. F. D- No. 3. You will hear unsuccessful people talk a good deal about luck and fortune, hut it is all bosh. Fortune is merely the good, hard sense that causes a man to prepare himself to take advantage of opportunity. Don't he fooled by silly tales of prosperity, dealt out by the hand of fortune. The hand of fortune is a hank book and the person who has provided himself with a nice, fat bank account is in position to carve his own fortune and make it what he wishes. It may take [some economy, thiift and perseverence to establish a good bank account, hut it always pav«. in the end. A small amount of cash will enable you to open an account with this bank, where your money ( will be absolutely safe and where you may always de pend upon the advice and influence of the bank to help your business interests.
