(Reprinted from Th*' Richmond Times- Dispatch of October 25, 19D7.) The Jamestown Exposition is get ting down to one of its most Inter esting periods. The jury of awards is as busy as a hive of bees in the season for the blossoming of the fruits and flowers, and the worthy ex hibitors are getting their gold medals, diplomas and other evidences of the merit of their exhibits. One among the first of the highly- prized gold medals awarded by the jury comes to T. W. Wood & Sons, the noted seedsmen of Richmond. A jury, composed of the thousands of people who enjoyed their splendid ex- liihits. and the jury of awards had nothing else to do hut to hand over to them the gold medal, the ,highest award that could he made. This they did on Saturday last. Thei r Splendid Exhibit. The exhibit of Wood & Sons, which has attracted attention from the open ing day of the exposition until now, and will continue to attract attention of farmers and gardeners to the end of the show, is one of the most elabo rate and certainly the best of its kind in the great exposition. A feature of the exhibit, but not the only feature by any means, is the exhibit of cowpeas. This comprises the largest number of distinctive va rieties of this valuable pea ever exhib ited anywhere in this country. The exhibit also covers all the desirable varieties of grass and clover seeds known to the soil of the South and West. An exhibit that is very attract ive is that of the seeds of forage plants used throughout the entire country, and right by the side of these may be found the very best va rieties of cotton seeds in the South. Seeds fro m pap Away. Another very attractive feature is tin' display of seed corn. This com prises the white and yellow seed corns that are now becoming so popu lar in the South and West. A most instructive exhibit is the large show of seeds from all parts of the world, giving the farmers of this country a true conception of what the agricul turists in other parts of the world grow from year to year. These show what the people of India. Australia and all parts of Kurope raise. Mes srs. Wood & Sons obtained these seeds at great expense, with the view of making tests to determine which of these crops may he profitably grown in this country. The Woods at Home. The establishment of T. W. Wood & Sons is one of the best' known in Richmond, and one that all of Rich mond. and all of Virginia as for that matter, is proud. The business of supplying the State and then the whole country with seeds of all kinds was started in 1879 by Mr. T. W. Wood, who trained his boys for the business. The present members of the firm are Henry W. Wood, William P. Wood, Thomas Whittet and Rob ert W- Wood. The business under the management of these energetic men has shown steady growth each suc cessive year until today it has reached the position of being one of the larg est general businesses in the seed line in this country. The main warehouse of the con cern, which is located on Fourteenth Street, in this city, is an immense building, erected for the special busi ness of handling seeds, and is un doubtedly one of the best equipped and most complete seed warehouses in the entire country. It has a capac ity fo r loading and unloading on rail way tracks alongside the warehouse of nine carloads at one time, and is equipped with all modern seed-clean ing machinery, elevator machinery, etc., for the proper handling of the seed business in all- of its depart ments. The Busines 6 is World-Wide. In addition to the splendid ware house on Fourteenth street, tne firm also occupies two other warehouses, which carry the supplies of seeds re quired for their trade and two retail stores, one at each of the city markets to take care of the local farmers’ and gardeners’ trade. The catalogues and other publica tions issued from time to time by HUB enterprising and energetic firm have long been noted for the correct ajia valuable information which they give in regard to the different crops, and a large share of the credit is due to them for the encouragement of the ilDersifleation of crops and the in creased attention now paid to grass and clover culture throughout the Smith. "Wood’s Crop Special,” issued in due seasons by this Arm. has become | a standard publication, and the farm ers of Virginia and the entire South have learned to rely upon it for accu rate and timely information as to Just when and how to plant various seeas in order to produce the very best re- sultg. Messrs. Wood & Sons maintain two seed and trial farms—one in Chester field county and one in Amelia. These farms are used and kept in active op en.I ion all the year round for testing | seeds of all classes and for experi menting in grass and other forage and field crops. The farms are utilized also for growing their selected seed stocks, which require very special care and from which they have crops of seed grown every year in this sec tion and other parts of the country. Taken altogether, there is nowhere in the Fnited States, nowhere in the world, in fact, a better equipped seed I establishment than that of T. W. ' Wood & Sons, of Richmond, and lo cated as it is at the gateway to the South, the greatest agricultural part of this great country, there is no won der that it has prospered beyond the fondest hopes of its founders, and there is no wonder that it led the van at the Jamestown exposition. It led because it deserved to lead. They were just coming out of the theatre after seeing a performance of “When Knights Were Bold.” "Oh, George,’ sighed the romantic maiden, “how I wish you were one o*f the old- time knights so that you could do something bravo to show your love for me ” “What more do you want?” asked George. “Haven’t I agreed to marry vou. and me only getting $10 a week ?”—Tattler.
