W# have noticed Items In oar t»- rtoato exchangee lately to the effect that legitimate supply and demand kaa nothing to do with the price of eotton. That the Wall Street gamb les Baa a great deal to do with ma- mlptfatlmg the price of the conunod- % we do not deny; but we cannot igrn with the proposition that the suppij has nothing to do with it, foi the very simple reason that In order to depress the price he must hare the cotton to deliver when the man to whom he has sold calls for it. So that M order to manipulate the price to aaft his own ends this gentleman must know that there is plenty of oot- taw where he can get It, or else the awas to whom he has sold will squeeie Mai at his pleasure. Maw. the remedy, ae we have said bstore, is In the hands of the farmers ia toe South. They hold the key to the Mtuatlon and If every bale of cot- tern, except that which Is obliged to bo asld, be held off the market, the geatfeman in Wall Street cannot get it with which to gamble. Already some big-hearted aad pub- lie dplrlted citizens in Cherokee coun ty Dave bought and stored quite a lot ef eutton, aad other gentlemen who have money to rpare are talking of dotog the same thing, and ^thls Is baton done all over the cotton belt, It wtl not be long until you will put thto festive gambler, who traffics in toe hearts and souls of his victims, eu* of business and he will be beg- Wag you to show him that mercy which he wag never known to accord anyone. The farmers of the South have be«B slaves to the gambler of the North ever since the war, but they are fast becoming educated and his tory records the fact that no enllght- eaed people ever wore the badge of slavery long, and when we “come In to our own again” we will, ae once before, be the dictators of the finan cial policy of the united Statee, and tirthnatelji that of the world. else, without paying him for hla time. We hope that the delegation from Cherokee county will introduce a bill at the next session of the general as sembly to cure this flagrant Injustice. NOTES AND COMMENTS. The Columbia State of Friday says there were twenty-eight thousanu paid admissions Into the fair grounds Thursday. If the facilities of the street car company were not better than they were last year we are glad we did not attend. * * • We have recently heard several citizens ask what has become of the commission that was appointed to investigate the affairs of the county. It was confidently expected that the committee would make their report at this term of court, but for some reason said report was not forthcom ing. Now, we know every member of the committee personally, and they are all good men, but people are en titled to know why the report has been so long delayed. It is up to you. gentlemen, to say why this Is so. Good Advice. (Union Times.) Some time ago the editor looked upon the house In Cherokee count7 in which Tom Harris murdered the aged woman and robbed her of her money. One of the thoughts that came to mind wag this: Why did this woman keep all that money hidden upon her person It Is strange that people come so slowly to realize that a bank is the place for money that is Idle. What a temptation to the lawless Is a de fenseless man or woman known to be hoarding money. Turn It Into a good bank and let It go to work, and at the same time thus get rid of the constant danger that its pres ence invites. Cure Not prevention. (Chicago Dally News.) A laborer lu eastern Indiana died recently and the members of the fra ternal order lu which he held mem bership called upon his widow to find how they might be of most as sistance in her distress. They made all arrangements for the order to at tend the funeral, but before settling upon the final details for the obse quies they desired to know if Jthe de ceased had any special church affilia tion. "Did your husband belong to any churchr’ was asked. “W’y, no,” said the woman, In as tonishment; "he never done nothin’ to belong to church fur.” Kings creek New*. Kings Creek, Nov. 1.—I will try to give a few happenings from this cor ner of Cherokee county. The weather has been pretty now and farmers are making good use of the time in this nelghbortiood, garn ering crops and sowing grain. Mr. E. B. McSwain has a cancer on his hand that is giving him lots of pain. Mr. Johnson Carroll and son-in-law, Mr. Tom Falls, have bought a saw mill. They are hustling men and we believe they will make a success with the mill. Mfr- and MJrs. ^inkney McSwaiu are rejoicing over a little bouncing girl. The health of this community .is generally good. Mr. J. L- S-, you must have good neighbors. They are mighty good to give you vegetables or you are a mighty poor farmer one, and your neighbors get sorry for you. Mrs. Jane Beheler Is lying very low at Mr. Johnson Carroll’s. She Is from Texas and Mr. Johnson Carrol! is her brother. I think The Ledger Is a grand pa per. If it did not have anything In it but Talmage’s sermon It would be worth what we pay for It, and, J. L. S., I do enjoy reading your letters. I wish more would write to The led ger. This is my first attempt to write to this paper, but If this does not find Its way to the waste basket I will come again. I am only a boy twelve years old. but don’t you for get I enjoy reading our home paper. Boys and girls, let’s all do all we can for our home paper, The Ledger. ,1 will quit for this time, but hope to come again when I have some news. A Reader. Jones J. GAFFNEY DRUG CO. oct-15-Tues-tf A FLAGRANT INJUSTICE. At the term of the criminal court which has just ended, a witness was taken away from his business In Lyadhburg, Va., and brought here to testify in a criminal case. Lynch burg is about 260 miles from Gaffney, and the pay of this witness was $1.6r>. A witness In a criminal case is en titled to 50 cents per day and five seats per mile one way, and he can only get mileage within the State. This witness wag here two days and this would give him $1.00 as his per diem, and the mileage from Grover to Raffney is 13. so he would be en- fitted to 91 cents mileage. This wit- new is a traveling man and If he need mileage It would cost him $6 60 railway fare to Gaffney and the same auBoant to return would make It cost hha $11.00 for railway fare alone, to tap nothing of hia hotel bill and other expenses. Mr. Carson, owner of the sawmill, had his eye on every stick of timber in the county, and the owner of ev ery poor little clump and grove had his eye on Mr. Carson and theMslng prices of lumber. George Wales cut his thin squad of pines, trimmed the logs, and piled them ■ In hla front lot by the road. Then he waited tor the time when he should accidentally be visible on the place and Mr. Carson should drive by. The encounter took place In due time. Mr. Carson rattled past in his wagon, took a sidelong look at the pile of logs and called, “Say, George, don’t you know it ain’t polite to throw your toothpicks ’round the front yard?’’ Bamburq is Like Gaffney. (Bamburg Herald.) Editor DeCamp, of the Gaffney Ledger, says he thinks there have been fewer business failures in Gaff ney during the past ten years thin any town In the State of like popula tion. We were under the Impression that Bamberg bad tbe finest record in this respect, but we may be mis taken. However, we wouldn’t mind comparing records with Gaffnty or any other town. Our observation for eight years and more makes ns be lieve that there are fewer buftneas failures In Bamberg and less real es tate sold under mortgage than In any coutny in South Carolina. We are glad to know that Cherokee Is so handsomely sustaining the reputation of new counties for progress and prosperity. Excused. (Chicago Tribune.) A popular after dinner speaker rose to respond to a toast. "Gentlemen,” he said, "the unex pectedly flattering manner in which your toastmaster has introduced me this evening reminds me of a story which strikes me as being appropri ate to tihe occasion. By the way, now many of you hav^ heard the story of the Pennsylvania farmer and the young wolf he bought for a 'ooon dog? r Will those who. are familiar with It from having listened to it half a dozen times or more please raise their hands.” An overwhelming majority of his auditors raised their hands. “Thanks, gentlemen.” he said, "f shall not Inflict it upon you.” With their rapturous applause still ringing in his ears, he sat down. He made the hit of the evening. Fair Warning. (Youth’s Companion.) Mrs. Wilson’s husband was often obliged to go to New York on busi ness and frequently did not reach his home until the arrival of the mid night train. Mrs. Wilson had, been In the habit of sleeping peacefully at these times without fear, but a num ber of burglaries in tbe neighborhood during one of her husband’s trips to New Yorh had disturbed her calm. On the night of his return Mr. Wil son was stealing carefully up the front stairs, as was his wont on such occasions, so that his wife would not be wakened, when he heard her voice, high and strained: ’T don’t know whether you are my husband or a burglar,” came the ex cited tones, “but I am going to be on the safe side and shoot, so if you are Henry you’d better get out of the way!'’ MONEY TO LOAN I am prepared to negotiate loans on first mortgage on improved farms for a term of years, in amounts from $300 up.
