South Carolina, such a change, that if those of us who are now here should be transported to some other part of the country and then return, we would not recog nize the places which were once so familiar to us. Cherokee county is the repository of such vast quantities of mineral wealth, that once the de velopments along this line commence in earnest, it will tax the resources of tbe county to provide sustenance for the large number of people who will be necessary U> carry ou development. The exploiting of the power Plants within the borders of our county is the beginning of this important work-the entering wedges as it were. There are now being de veloped within a few miles of Gaffney power Plants which will aggregate some 35.000 horse power, and anot i plant which is contempiated wUlswel the total to something like 50,000 horse power, and those plants are all situated in the very heart of the mineral belt, where they can. with out diffilculty, obtain cheap power in unlimited quantities for this great work. The R°ss tin mine is no myth, as the outeide world would try to make it app&f The fact that Capt. Ross has already disposed of aoout sixty tons of high grade tin ore at fancy prices, with another shipment almost ready, and the fact that he is now engaged in installing new and ex pensive machinery in his mine, is con clusive of this fact. Within a short distance of our county seat, only the other day. a rich vein of lead ore ■was said to have been dlcover- ed, and within less than six miles of Gaffney, there has been dis covered a rich deposit of magnanese; ■while only a short distance from the tnagenese deposit, preparations are being made to work a gold mine which promises a rich yield. The Cherokee Iron Works were situated within less than five miles from where the city of Gaffney now stands, and were for a number of years operated at a fine profit for Its owner. Monazite is found in almost every stream in our county, and can be mined at a good profit. Untold wealth is lying under our feet within easy distance of the surface, and is only waiting for some one to take it out, and we are Just beginning to realize that fact. Some day—and It is not far distant—the people of Cherokee county will awaken from their Rip Van Winkle sleep, to the realization of the fact that they possess fabulous wealth, which may be had for the asking, and then they will wonder why they lived so long in ignorance of the fact that they were the most favored people in the United States of America, be cause in addition to the facts already stated, we live in the healthiest sec tion—that of the Piedmont—in the very heart of which we live, perfect climate, good pure water, a magnifi cent farming section in which any thing except the tropical products may be grown, and it can be readily seen that the potentialities of Chero kee county are truly wonderful. should come out tonight to the Board of Trade meeting. • • • Come out to tb Board of Trade meeting tonight, whether you are a member or not. We are having a good prayer-meet ing at this place which is conducted by Mr. W. F. Hustey. Mr. B. H. says something concern ing the “soap gourds” at this place. Well, I shall not say his head is de formed furthermore than it resembles a squash. He will take and be known by his new and lawful name this 8th day of October, the year of 1907. ^ J. L. J. Jones* Shows. Jones' shows were here on Tues day and gave two very creditable per formances. The acrobatic work was considerably above the average and was much better than was to be ex pected from an aggregation of this kind traveling through the country- The work of the clowns was fairly good, and the performing elephants, the trick roay and mule were also features well worthy of mention. Darby, Insarance Office Star Theatre Building Mrs. Anderson Improving. Mrs. Henry Anderson, the Salisbury woman assaulted by her husband on the street three weeks ago, is im proving. She is in a cottage occupied by colored people and living upon their charity. She was carried into that p’ace when she received the stab and does not have friends to look af ter her. Her husband is still in Jail and unable to help her while her rel atives have deserted her. She does not forgive her husband who se^ms to have been crazed by morphine, and vows she will repent but not forgive. Dropped Dead Fro m Excitement. Excited at the sight of a telegram being delivered to her by one of the local messenger boys, a r#gro woman named Banks dropped dead at her home on Linden street in Winston- Salem Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock. It was at first thougnt mat the woman had only fainted and a physician was hurriedly summoned. Dr. Hull, colored, was called in and made an examination. The woman was dead when he arrived. He pro nounced her death due to heart trouble, which was doubtless nroduc- jed by the sight of the telegram. The woman had been ill for several days and it is thought that this was the cause of the compleie collapse at tbe sight of/the telegram. The messen ger boy was terribly frightened when the woman fell to the floor and rush ed out after a physician.
