That the public school system of Gaffney may come in closer touch with the people, and that in its schools the citizens may find supplied for their children that instruction which will both lit tor entrance Into Institutions for higher education, and alao tor the business of oread-win ning, the school authorities have an* ger consideration two additional fea tures in the work of the city schools. One is the addition of a night school at the Cherokee Avenue and Umestone schools. for the benefit of those who cannot afford the time to attend the regular day school, and yet have the ambition to master circumstances by attaining an education at the cost of extra effort on their own part. If established, it is intended that tuition shall be free to those who are entitled to attend the public schools of the district The other innovation Is a branch of high school work, which may be a business course. Including stenography and typewriting. Supei- intendent Spears hopes to attain suf ficient funds from the appropriation under the high school act for the es tablishment of the latter. This would make a valuable addition to our school facilities and cost no more than the expenses of tne necessary election. Other towns, both smaller and larg er. around us are obtaining from six tc eight hundred dollars from the State appropriation for high schools. Gaffney, it would seem should have her Share and should take her place In the line of progress. The views contained in the forego ing are endorsed fully by Superinten dent spears of the city graded schools to whom this article was submitted before being published. Graham goes on to say that the cool ness was caused by the Joint owner ship of a certain ’possum dog, and that he has agreed to withdraw from the race and throw his support to Col. Ike upon the express condition that Col. Ike renounce all right, title j and interest In and to any part of said < dog to Mr. Graham. Mr. Graham wishes it distinctly understood that when election day comes he will be ■K- .<*• Ti there Smith. with the goods for Mayor m • • The most ardent supporter of the dispensary must now admit that the situation in Gaffney is greatly improv ed since voting out the dispensary. Formerly, we mean before the dispen sary was voted out, it was a common sight to see persons reeling on the sidewalks under the influence of whiskey, especially on Saturday af ternoon; now It Is a very rare thing to see anyone drunk on our streets; and the records in the police court will show that the number of cases of “drunk and disorderly” have de creased more than 100 per cent. It is true that there is considerable illi cit whiskey traffic going on in some parts of the county; but we do not believe that It has Increased to any extent since the voting out of the dispensary. In some parts of the county this traffic was going on while the dispensaries were doing business at Gaffney and Blacksburg, and we do not believe that the dispensary af fected this traffic one way or the other. •m ARE YOU OUT OF A JOB?
