Mr. Whlsonant Is a merchant, and simply to illustrate how closely he attends to business we will state that this is his first visit to Gaffney in almost twelve months, and this notwith standing the fact that he lives with in ten miles of the city. The protracted meeting which com menced Monday at Buford Street Methodist church Is attracting large congregations who are intensely Inter ested in the services. Rev. J. W. Speake, of Latta is conducting the th« City and Other Event* Gather ; services. This young minister Is an interesting and forceful speaker and ; his work here will n 0 doubt be pro ductive of much good. Gerard Lipscomb suffered an Injury to his foot Tuesday that will keen it ftom Mother Barth for some time. The injury is the result of a fall. Mn. W. W. Hoard and family, of Winnsboro, who have been visiting Mr. Hoard’s sister. Mrs. J. S. Forten- bury. left Wednesday morning for their home. The regular services at Midway next Saturday at 2:30 n. m. and at 11 a. m. Sunday, will be conducted by the pastor. Rev. E. G. Ross. Every body Is cordially Invited. R. A. Jones is renovating his pre mises on Limestone street, remodling his store-room, and otherwise adding to the convenience and appearance of his place of business. J. B. Sparks, who lost an action in Magistrate Alexander’s court. In re gard to a cow and calf, has appealed from the verdict of the jury, which was in favor of Benner Phillips. The young man who was severely shocked by a stroke of lightning dur ing the recent storm, was lound not to be seriously hurt as was at first feared, only suffering a severe shock. Dr. A. M. Simms will fill his pulpit at the First Baptist church as usual next Sunday. He will probably re turn from North Carolina where he has been spending his vacation, to day. Rev. T. B. Owens, of the Gaffney circuit, began a meeting at Asbury church last Sunday. There is much Interest manifested in the services which are attended by large congre gations. Mr. O. R. Byars brought to The Ledger office Wednesday an open boll of cotton which he plucked from his field last Friday—one week ago today. Cotton is beginning to open pretty fast now. On account of Monday being a le gal holiday (the first Monday in September, which Is Labor Day) the banks of the city will not be open for business. The postofflee will observe Sunday hours. The recent electrical storm played havoc with some of the furniture of the Merchants and Planters Bank. The desk of the cashier. Mr. R. S. Lipscomb, was considerably damaged by a bolt of lightning. A number from Gaffney will go to Wllkinsville tomorrow to attend the big day there under the auspices of the Wllkinsville Camp W. O. W. Speeches and a good dinner will be distinctly In evidence. Rev. W. T. Thompson nas been presented with ft watermelon that is remarkable on account of Its size. Tho melon, which-was raised by Mr. Al fred McDaniel, measured twenty-four Inches from tin to blossom. Messrs. A. B- and D. M. Gaines are engaged In repainting several signs throughout the city. The change is made necessary owing to the several changes in business that ^fill take place September 1st. The Company Store of the Gaffney Manufacturing) Company is in the hands of painters and several very attractive changes are being made. The general appearance of th e store is much Improved by the changes. Material is being placed on the ground at Grassy Pond for the erect ion of a new church building. The edifice will be a modern one in every respect and will reflect great credit on the good citizens of Grassv Pond. Walter Chambers, a negro employed at Lavender’s saw mill, near King’s Creeb, was the victim of an accident Wednesday that cost him 1 his life. He was struck bv the belt operating the machinery and a speedy death was the result. Statements have been Issued to the public by the First National Bank and the Gaffney Savings Bank showing their flourishing condition. The statements reflect great credit on the officials of the banks who are respon sible for the splendid showing. George Mason, the night telephone operator at the Gaffney Telephone office, received an injury Tuesday af ternoon while engaged in a scrub game of ball. The injury is slight, however, the only inconvenience be ing the carrying of his arm in a sling. W. J. Wilkins & Company are mov ing from their Limestone street store to the new store room recently completed on East Frederick street. The store room now occupied by Wil kins & Company will be occupied in a few days by J. C. Ratliff and his Battery. Jim Lipscomb, the negro, who was so anxious to have an advertisement changed into four good silver quar ters, and who was before the mayor but could not be triefrin city court, is now in jail, being held for an ap pearance before Magistrate B. F. Camp. Gaffney citizens were aroused in the early hours of Wednesday by a fire alarm. A “dry” house at the Limestone Lime Company burned up causing a loss of five thousand burned staves. This is the second conflagra tion at the lim ft works Within the last few das. the other fire resulting in a similar loss. Rev. J. F. Matheson, pastor of Limestone Street Presbyterian church, was called to Easley Tuesday by the illness of Mrs. Matheson. He will , return for services Sunday but prayer meeting will not be held Wednesday evening, the Presbyterians worsnip- i ing with the Methodists in their meet ing which is in progress at Buford Street Methodist church. Butler Dawkins, a well known char acter among the negroes of Gaffney, was arraigned before United States Commissioner j. b. Bell, Tuesday, on a charge of selling whiskey. The de fendant was represented by J. C. Jet* feries. Esq. After hearing the testi mony in the case, the commissioner bound him over to United States court. He was released on bond, h Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Osborne, of Blacksburg, were in the city Tuesday. W!hile here theye were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Osborne, on East Buford street. Mr. and Mrs. Osborne are always welcome visitors to Gaff ney. and whilo The Ledger would hate to rob Blacksburg of any of her good citizens we do not hesitate to say that they would be welcome and at tractive additions to our little city. A base ball team from the Gaffney Manufacturing Company and'' Gaff ney’s fast (?) second team played a game of baseball at Limestone Park- Monday afternoon. The game result ed in an overwhelming victory for the mill boys. Gaffney’s second best were unable to score but three runs while the opposing club registered about fourteen. The batteries were for the mill, Benson and Jones. City, Wood and Mason. Rev. W. T. Thompson returned Monday from Unity church near Hickory Grove, where he, assisted bv Rev. J. P. Whelchel. of this city, has Just concluded a singularly success ful meeting. The meeting lasted for a week and was attended by large congregations at each service. On Sunday the number in attendance is thought to have reached a thousand. Six presented themselves for baptism and were baptized Sunday. The dea cons of the church presented the min isters with a purse of twenty-two dol lars as a mark of their appreciation of their good work. Notice has been given of the open ing of the books of subscription to the capital stock of the J. E. Lip scomb Company, succeeding the W. Sam Lipscomb Company on Lime stone street. This Arm which comes into existence August 31st, will con duct their business at the same stand occupied by W. Sam Lipscomb Com pany. The corporation uas a capital stock of $10,000. They will engage in a general mercantile business; brokerage and commission business, buying and selling r ea] estate. Messrs. J. E. Lipscmb and W. Sam Lipscomb are named as the board of corporat ors. A pathetic scene occurred in the mayor’s court yetserday morning. A small boy. whose age was* give n as fifteen, was before the mayor on a well-worn charge of vagrancy. His aged mother and grandmother were present to plead in behalf of the boy. This was not his first appearance be fore the mayor it seems, and as he had been released on previous occas ions, with conditions attached, viz: that he go to work, his honor was not inclined to be easy. Finally, on prom- is» of the mother to take the boy away from Gaffney, sentence was sus pended in the case, provided he is not seen in Gaffney again. A white man also appeared in behalf of his son who is now a fugitive from jus- | tice. on account of being wantea on | the same charge—vagrancy.
