Kirby, while attending the ceremonies at the unveiling of Hamlet LeMaster’s monument last Saturday, was overcome with heat and for a short while was quite sick. She is much better, we are glad to say. Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Millwood, of Hickory Grove, spent last Sabbath with Mr. anfi Mrs. Charley Foster. Canning blackberries is now the work- of housewives in this section. The waters of Thickety and Gilky creeks were over the low lands a good portion of last week wnd drowned out the crops again. We know of no sickness in our community at this time worth men tioning. At a meeting at the colored church neap Dr. Black’s, ou Sabbath of last week, a disturbance was occasioned by a drunken rough making his ap pearance on the scene and exhibit ing a razor and pistol to th* terror of the men lawfully inclined. If such demonstrations of lawlessness are allowed to go unchecked and un punished, peaceful worshipers will soon find that their church work will have to be abandoned. Why this pistol and razor "toting” fraternity are allowed to stalk the highway and enter public gatherings is something we can’t understand. If they were properly dealt with the chaingang and penitentiary forces would be materially reinforced. If the law can’t he enforced it might as well he expended from the statute books, altogether. Messrs. W. C. Blackwell and T. J. Estes are attending court at Gaffney this week as jurors. We haven’t seen or heard of any cotton blooms yet. Mr. R. W. Whitesides, of Sharon, spent Friday night with us. He re ports a destructive hail storm as passing over the section of country between Union and Santuc, in Union county last week completely destroy ing the crops. Mr. James Carter, fathe r of Messrs. John and Joe Car ter, of Timber Ridge, in this county, was one of the greatest sufferers by the storm. Mr. Whitesides is can vassing for a Georgia nursery. Farmers have gone to sowing peas since the rain. Seed is very s«aree i n this section and high, too. Mr. W. C. Blackwell’s folks had an ice cream supper to which a num ber of friends were invited.
