KENNEDY Do Not Wor CHAPTER XXI. “Now if you ask who gave the stroke I cannot tell, so mote I thrivo; It wag not given by man alive.” —I .ay of the last Minstrel. It was a little before day-breah on Sunday morning, the fifteenth of August (a day rendered memorable by the exploit of Sumpter, who cap tured, In tie vicinity of Rocky Mount, a large quantity of military stores, and a numerous escort, then on their way from Ninety-Six to Camden), that James Curry was travelling in the neighborhood of the Ennoree, some four miles distant from Mtis- grove’s mill. He had a few hours be fore left the garrison of Ninety-Six, and was now hieing with all haste to Blackstock’s on a mission of import tance. The night had been sultry, but the approach of the dawn had brought with It that refreshing cool ness which is always to be remark©^ in the half hour that precedes the first blush of morning. The dragoon had had a weary night-ride, but the recent change of temperature had Invigorated his system and given buoyancy to his spirits. This effect was exhibited In his first whistling a tune, then humming the words of a ditty, and. finally, in breaking forth Into a loud full song, which, as he had a good voice and practiced skill, increased in loudness as he became better pleased with the trial of his powers. The song was occasionally Intermitted to give room to certain self-communings which the pastime suggested. in the breeze; and it was with an awkward land unacknowledged spiye of faint heartedness that Curry put up his sword and remounted into his saddle. He first moved slowly for ward in continuation of his journey; and, as his thoughts still ran upon the extraordinary incident, he ap plied spurs to his horse’s side, and gradually increased his pace from a trot to a gallop, and from that ’to al most high speed, until he emerged from the wood upon a track of open country. W|ien he reached this spot the dav had already appeared above the eastern horizon; and reassured, a s the 1'ght waxed stronger, the dra goon, by degrees, fell into his cus tomary travelling pace, and resumed the equanimity of his temper. About ten o'clock in the day he reacned Blackstock’s, where he ar rived in a heavy rain, that had been falling for the last three hours, and which had drenched him to the skin. So, rapidly dismounting and giving his horse into the charge of some of the idlers about the door, he entered the common room in which were as sembled the greater part of the mili tia guard and of Habershaw’s troop ers. His first momvement was to take the burly captain aside, and to communicate to him certain orders from the commanding officer at Ninety- Six, respecting the prisoner; which being • done, he mingled with his sual affectedly earless and mirth ful manner amongst the throng. Butler, through the intercession of Bruce, had been indulged with COLOSSAL SCHEME. Plan to ImprovO the Coffaa Trad* of Brazil. New York, May 28.—'Attention of flnanclera Is again called to the cof fee valorization scheme of the coffee states of Brazil bf the announcement that another loan of >10,000,000 has Just been made in connection with the plan by the Dresdener Bank of Ger many. As was the case In previous loans, the money Is paid directly to Sao Paulo, one of the coffee states, but Instead of the loan being made with coffee as collateral, the bankers mak ing the loan have taken over on lease the Oracabana railway, one of the Trqft Important railroads of Sao Paulo. Adding the >10,000,000 now pledged through the lease of the rail road, the coffee states of Brazil have raised. It Is stated, the enormous sum of >95,000,000 In pursuance of the plan to Improve the coffee trade of Brazil. There are now held as collateral 7,500,000 bags of coffee. Of this amount, Hamburg, New York and London merchants and bankers hold 6,0^)0,000 hags. No other scheme as colossal In ex tent has ever been tried by any or ganization or country In the market ing of any commodity aa has* the cof fee valorization scheme of the coffee states of Brazil. The federal con gress of Brazil recently received a message from the president of the republic of Brazil containing the in formation that the coffee question was a national issue and not simply a qirt^tlon of the coffee states. The president's message stated also that the federal government would endorse and- guarantee for the coffee states to the amount of >75,000,000, which ELECTION NOTICE. Two soldiers stood sufficiently near to •'■nder his custody effectual without much personal annoyance. As yet he ha ( ] been unable to glean any- hing from the conversation of those around him, by which he might form the least conjecture as to his prob able destiny. His intercourse with his captors was restricted to the mere supply of his immediate wants. All other communication was strict ly Interdicted. Even Habershaw himself seemed to be under some au thoritative command, to deny him self the gratification of either ex hibiting his own importance, or of wreaking his spleen upon his prison er; and when Butler attempted to gain from Bruce some hint as to what was intended, the only answer he received was conveyed by the soldier’s putting his finger on his lip. BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS, P>y A. N. Wood, dim. J. N. Lipscomb, W. II. Ross. The Kinger was. a t. this Instant, ar rested at the top of his voice by a blow against the hack of his head.be stowed, apparently, by some ponder ons hand, that so effectually swayed him from the Hue of gravity, as to cause him to reel i n his saddle, and by an irrecoverable impetus, to swing round to the ground, where he alight ed on fils fiack. with the reins of his horse firmly held In his hand, “Singing on Sunday Is against the law," said a hoarse voice, that came apparently from the air, as the dark ness of the hour—which was increas ed by a n overcast and lowering sky as well as by the thick wood through which th‘* road ran, prevented the stricken man from discerning any thing that, might have done him harm, even if such thing had been bodily present. The soldier lay for a mo ment prostrate, bewildered by the suddennes of this mysterious visita tion; and when, at length, he regain ed his feet, he almost fancied that tie heard receding from him, at a great distance, the dull beat of a horses’s foot upon the sandy road. Curry, who a» a soldier was in sensible to fear, now shook in every joint, as he stood beside his horse in a state of confused and ravelled wonderment. He strained his ear to eateh the sound in the direction towards which he thought he had heard the retreating footsteps, but his more deliberate attention per suaded him that he was mistaken in his first impression. Still more muz zled as he came into the possession of his faculties, of which the abrupt- nesz of the surpise had almost bereft him, he stood for some time mute; then drawing his sword with the alacrity of a man, who all at once be- Heveg himself in danger of an up lifted blow, he called out loudly, “Speak, and show yourself, if you be a man; Or if there he a party, let them rome forth. Who waylays me? Remember, \ warn him. in the name 0 f th,. king, that I am on his majesty’s errand, and that they are not far off who will punish any out rage on my person.
