Fay lavender, formerly with the local office of the Southern Express company, is now an express mes senger on the Sourthern Railway. Many people were in the city Sat urday. All day long the streets were crowded and the day was a good one from a business standpoint. Superintendent of Education J. L». Walfoer is working for two more school districts. He is most energetic in the respect, having secured eight. The improvements wlhich have been in progress on Mr. N. C. Snead’s cottage on Race street have been finished. The appearance of the resi dence is much improved by the work. Rev. T. T. Farmers in the city Saturday re port that the condition of the crops in most instances throughout the county are fair considering the un favorable weather they have been called unon to survive. A compromise was effected in a case of assault and battery before Magistrate C. T. Bridges Friday. The case involved two brothers and the comp omise happily terminated the affair. Health Officer A. L. Hallman con tinues his vigil for signs as to the health situation and is busy Urging one and all to preserve the conditions necessary to perfect health In Gaff ney. On last Saturday Rev. C. F. Pelmet lost, the subscription boob to the fund to build a new church at Grassy Pond. The boOk could be of no value to the finder and Mr. Felmet yould be very glad to have It left at The Ledger office. Mir. Boyd Sarratt has Installed a gigantic tank in his tonsorial parlors which is probabhr the largest in the city. Mr. Sarratt had this tank made especially for him as it was im possible for him to secure one quite lance enough here. Train No. 39 continues to be the Southern’s belated child. It Is sel dom in/teed that it is seen in Gaffney at 9:45, schedule time. A number qt pedestralns around the station and dtr each morning about this time means No. 39 late again. Mayor’s court yesterday morning was a brief affAir. A nameless drunk forfeited two dollars and fifty cents. Another case of disorderly conduct was continued on acoount of the ab sence of some witnesses and the sickness of one principal. •• i, - .. The city prison is a lonely place these days. Not a persons can be seen in the ceils and as the police offlfcers say, the occupants aye prov ing the oM axiom, a burnt child dreads the fire. It is probable it will continue In its lonely state. t The 1907 theatrical season has closed at the Star Theatre, the at traction on Thursday evening, “My Wife’s Family," being the last at traction of the year. Only a few aaw the closing play which was one of the best ever presented in Gaffney. The negroes of the city expect to play base ball with Salisbury. In the next few days. The game will take place in Salisbury. The Gaffney ne groes have quite a reputation and will no doubt give a good acoount of themselves. Ben W. Clary has accepted a posi tion on the clerical force at the local “ i 1 of the Southern Express Co. He Is a young man of considerable experience in this branch of woric and his aqulsition to the force at the Bxpres# office will no doubt prove a good step. Mr. Harold Gibson visited this of fice yesterday with a handsome spec imen of potato of this year's growth. Mk. A serious accident was narrowlv averted Saturday afternoon when, by the- horse becoming frightened. Miss Louise Goudelock and little Jean Goudelock were thrown out of the buggy but not hurt. Mrs. S. F. Par- rdtt and little child who were also in the buggv. kept their seats. Ruth, the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wilson, died Satur day afternoon after a brief illness. The interment took place Sunday at Buffalo cuurch. in Cherokee town ship. this county. Mr. and Mrs. Wil son have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their bereave ment ' " iii A number of pupils of Central school of the public schools enjoyed picnic at Limestone Springs on Friday. The company had just been released from nine months of grind ing school duties and of course the da> was one of unalloyed pleasure. Misses Harris and Spillman chaperon ed during the day. Saturday was hot. Not just warm but sizzling hot. The kind of day that makes one hot before he does anything and keeps him tired all the time. The park was a popular resort for many who live up town. Several were seen to take refuge In Its shade from the glaring sun while going to and from their meals. A large number from Gaffney were present at Jonesville Friday, the oc casion being the unveiling of the monument erected at that place to the Confederate veteran*. The cere monies were most impressive and wei*e witnessed by people from all over the State. An account of the day appears in another column. Z. A. Robertson has purchased a large tract of land situated in front of the Irene min and known as the Geo. M. Mill* estate. Mir. Robertson bought the land as an investment and will sen it In building lots. The laud is divided into fifty-three lots. This Is valuable property and will no doubt be disposed of rapidly. Borne changes are being made in the lake and park at the Irene park. This beautiful mecca to the young people of Gaffney Is being made more enchanting to the many who dally en joy its beauties. The work at the park is under the charge of “UndeL togan” Ellis and he is being compli mented on all sides for his careful work, A large number of students were assembled at Central school of the public schools Friday at noon to re ceive the certificates that insure their Promotion from one grade to another. The school closed* a most prosperous session and teachers and pupils can enter into their vacation with no misgivings but a knowledge of a years work well and profitably done. There was a noted Improvement In the music service at Buford Street M. E. church last Sunday. The chorus has been Increased to twelve, but male voices are needd to prop erly balance the parts. “David’s Prayer." a soprano solo, was beauti fully rendered by Mrs. Oscar Shanfas at the morning service, while in the evening Mrs. Cole was the sololpt for the Dank’s Authem “Be Joyful in the Lord." Cherokee avenue school closed on last Friday night one of its most successful year's work with it* usual annual entertainment. The program was an entertaining one and the children rendeied every part with superior ability. The children that took part Were mostly from {he ffrst and second grade*. It is to the credit of Cherokee avenue school that tha annnal entertainments are always looked forward to by the community a- one of the most delightful occas ion* qf jhe near.
