MIGHTY MEAN BUSINESS Some Scoundrel Tried to Wreck a Southern Train Sunday. Some one attempted to wreck a train on the Southern railway at Cherokee creek trestle last Sunday morninR by placing a large bolt on t v - track and fastening It there. Two colored mrn were on one end of the trestle on the side of the track talk- ini' Thev saw a man coming from the cut on the other side. He did not cross the trestle but stopped, stooped down and then went back. These colored men paid no particular atten tion to this man and when they had finished their conversation one of them—dim Crosby—started across the trestle and discovered the bolt on the track. He reported the discovery to Mr. W. A. Haas, who loosened the bolt and brought it to Gaffney, turn ing it over to the railroad authorities. An investigation was instituted but nothing has been discovered that would lead to the detection of the would-be train wrecker. This is the second attempt to wreck a train at this point. About a year ago some unknown Person placed a cross-tie on the track near this same trestle. The engineer saw the ob struction in time to slow up and al though the engine struck the tie and it was pushed along the track for a considerable distance no damage was done. Mr. Gooding Resigns. At a meeting of the directors of the Cherokee Building and Loan as sociation held yesterday morning in the office of the National Bank of Gaffnev Mr. W. H. Gooding, vyho has been holding the position of secre tary and treasure, tendered his .resig nation. Mr. W. W. Gaffney was elected to fill the unexpired .term of Mr. Gooding, which is until February 5th. 1908. Mr. J. C. Otts. one of the directors having made application for with drawal, Mr. J. C. On last Sunday at ten o’clock at the home of the bride’s parents. -Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Blackwell, near Ezells, Mr. Jas. H. Champion and Miss Nannie Blackwell were united in the holv bonds of matrimony. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. A. Tate and was witnessed by a few of their friends and relatives. The bride is one of Cherokee coun ty’s fair ladies. The groom is a popular young mer chant of Spartanburg county. . At one o’clock the guests were call ed in for dinner, the number being between forty and fifty, and found a nice dinner which had been prepared for the occasion. The best wishes of their many friends goes out to the young couple. The Edsall-Winthrope Co. The opening bill will be that famous me’o drama. ‘ ‘Th^ Light House Robbery.” Prices will be 15 and 25 cents with 10 cents extra for a reserved opera chair. Death of D. S. Lipscomb. Mr. D. S. Lipscomb, of Cowoens. died last Friday morning and was buried Saturday. Mr. Lipscomb was well and favorably known in Gaffney, He was the father of Mrs. R. S.,Cjx>k. of this city, and often visited Gaff ney. Mr. Lipscomb was fifty-nine years of age. He was a quiet, unob trusive gentleman and made Meads with all with whom he came ip con tract.
