For the past few weeks New York has been havinK a veritable "carni val of fashion" though this is the season of sackcloth. Opening after opening has been held at the repre sentative stores, and at the more private establishments where fine attire is dealt in to say nothing of the displays of practical suits made b"' manufactureres here. Very Light Colors. White or very light colored grounds with colored stripes, as well as checks of similar style, are among j j the most notable showings of the season. Wonderfully elaborate ef fects are obtained by using, in the same suit, stripes running length wise. across, and biased at different angles. The whole trimming effect being obtained by these line arrange ments. Slender Effect*. In the hands of a shillful tailor no woman should be obliged to go about looking dowdy for the want i o f it New Shirt Waists. With practical suits the extra waist is Just as much to the fore as ! ever. Shirt waists of a washable I sort made of linen and fine cottons have very full, much pleated fronts, and close down the centre with a narrow box plait edged with nar row plaited ruffles. Embroidered turn over collars are the most fashionable neckwear with these, and little buttuifly bows are used more than an/ other form of neck tie. Colored Borders. There is a veritable rage for bor dered effects, which is manifested in all kinds of goods, from stamped silks and chiffons for function gowns that sell up to $12 per yard to color ed bordered handkerchiefs—pretty ones too—that sell for 25 cents each. Indestructible by fire and capable of withstanding an impact of 3.000,000 pounds on Its ends In case of wre< k. the Jamestown, the first Pullman car built entirely of metal, is on view in the Grand Central station, says tiie New York Press. Max Schneider of the Pullman company, the designer of th* car, boasts the Jamestown is wreck proof. He believes that if it be thrown from the rails it will bump about like a huge safe, protecting Its occupants from any inJv”" save a slight shaking. Ha has red».,u for his belief. The great weight of the car has revealed an advantage unforeseen to its designer. In addition to being collision proof the Jamestown, the designer asserts, is fireproof. The oar Is built of steel aluminium and brass throughout so, with th* exception of bedding and cushions, there are no inflammable fit tings or famishing*. According to a report of Consul Gen eral Guenther of Frankfort, German and Austro-Hungarian journals speak of the gradual depopulation of Hun gary. Official statistics show that for 100o in Hungary the excess of births over deaths was 150,970, but the emi gration was 254,305, causing a net loss of over 100,000. Of the 254,305 emi grants for whom passports were Issued 163,703 went to the United States, This depreciation is affecting con scription statistics. For example, in the Lubloe township the draft called for 647 capable recrnlts to serve in the ranks and only 131 appeared; the 516 absentees had emigrated to Amer ica. Those appearing were mainly of poor quality, only 51 of the 181 being considered fit Alcohol From Garbage. That the method of garbage disposal Is about to be revolutionized by the manufacture of denatured alcohol is the statement made to the common council of Milwaukee by Dr. W. A. Boyd of Rockford, 111.
