BishopvDIe, Dec. 25.—It had been known by the authorities here that the town has been for some time in fested by a gang of negro gamblers and repeated efforts had been made to break them tip, but they were so wary, that almost every attempt had t en unsuccessful. •But Sunday morning our efficient police surprised a party who well su^nlied with a liberal stock of the “rasy,” were having a little game and captured the entire crowd. On being suspected they broke tfcnd ran. but after a long race, in which the officers were compelled to use their weapons, the entire gang wa/< ba^ed. In the melee Lucian Kennedy and Sam Howard were shot and slightly wounded and Frazer McIntosh, Bill Davis, Alex Davis, Robert Benjamin and Walter Davts were committed to the calaboose to answer to tb" town council for their little indiscretion. A Clever Burglarizing Scheme Re vealed in an Aiken Store. Aiken. Dec. 25.—A clever burglar izing scheme has just been discover ed in the store of Hohn & Company here. For sometime past it has been suspected that their store was being entered by burglars during the night, and when it was plainly indicat 'd, a watchman w T as employed to stay in the store at nights, though he did not see or hear anyone. A few nights ago Mr. Munday, who lives in a near by building, heard knocking against the r ar door of the store. Getting his gun he went out and caught two ne-'ro boys in the act of going into the store. It appears that by climbing upon an adjoining building, and going down a telegraph pole they came to a rear door, which, owing to its ob scurity. was not kept locked. The bovs who are only about fifteen veurs o d. were turned over to the county authorities. Negro Suspect Arrested. Lancaster, Dec. 25.—Sheriff Hunter arrested and lodged in jail Saturday i a negro named Beauregard Robert son charged with breaking into the store of Mr. Ellison Plyler, about ten miles in the country the night, be fore. Mr. Blyler's son-inlaw. Mr. Howie, heard a noise in the store Fri day night, and going to the building, found a man Inside. He fired at the party but missed him, and his gun re fusing to discharge the second time, he broke the weapon over the burg lar’s head The latter, however, es caped. Lamar, Dec. 25.—News was receiv ed here this afternoon that the little seven-vear old son of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Barnell had been badly burned. The only facts that can he had now are that the chi d had followed some older boys a distance of a half mlie from the house, where they built a fire They remained for a short while, and then the older boys strolled off, leaving the child at the fire. They retumo'] in a short time, onlv to find the chi’d burned almost to death. Dr. Watson, who was called to the bed- side of the child, stated that it could not recover. While the child was a mute It. was exceedingly bright, and his death will he a source of much regret to all who are acquainted with him. Shot in the Mouth. Aiken. Dec. 25.—In a shooting af fair Saturday night Charlie Webb was shot and probably fatally wounded h” Dock- Rogers, both white men. It annears that the two men were going home from Aiken in a drunken ren dition. A short way out they got to quarrelling and Rogers shot Webb in the month, making a severe wound. Both men came back to Aiken where medical attention was given Webb. The physician states that there is lit tle hone for his recovery. There are three ways used by far mers for curing and preparing their tobacco for the market; namely, sun cured, air cured and flue cured. The old and cheap way is called air cured; the later discovery and improved way is called flue cured. In flue-curing the tobacco is taken from the field and suspended over intensely hot flues in houses especially built to re tain the heat, and there kept in the proper temperature until this curing process developes in the tobacco the stimulating taste and fragrant aroma found in Schnapps tobacco, just as green coffee is made fragrant and stimulating by the roasting process. Only choice selections of this ripe, juicy flue cured leaf, grown in the famous Piedmont country, where the best tobacco grows, are used in Schnapps and other Reynolds’ brands of high grade, flue cured tobaccos. Hundreds of imitation brands are on sale that look like Schnapps; the outside of the imitation plugs of to bacco is flue cured, but the inside is filled with cheap, flimsy, heavily sweetened air cured tobacco; one chew of Schnapps will satisfy tobacco hunger longer than two chews of such tobacco.
