Glad tidings come from the Old North State. The Democrats have beaten the Republicans in every Con gressional District .thus sending a solid delegation to Washington. Old North Carolina—and may God bless her—his always been the best State in the Cuion—excepting, of coins South Carolina. * * * In tiu death of Mrs. Virginia D Young the State loses one of its best ()t - ^ , m women, the press one of its bright lights, and every member of the State Press Association a personal friend. She was a true gentlewoman and won friends because of her worthiness. She had a kind word for everybody, an encouraging word for strugling humanity. We only regret that our knowledge of words will not permit us to lay upon her bier a flower worthy of her fame. 11 ■hild. It must be remembered, how- did not get the side of We have not talked o a single man who was called, but we have learned that one physician ,viio was called con'd not go because 1 ■ had to go elsewhere- and another me could not eo on account of being HI himself, and it is very probable that the other two had good reason for not going. The reporter simuly took the father's statement that he could not get a physician to come be cause he had no money with which to pay. The father may have been mistaken. Certain it is that he did get a physician the next day without saving to say anything about the pay. There is no question but that phy sicians are very often imposed upon and in this case we tire satisfic'd we have done at least two men an injus tice by not looking into the matter before publishing the story. Such come up verv often in the lite of a newspaper. The makers of newspa pers are nothing more than human beings. They make mistakes just like other people. We know of no remedy except to acknowledge, them when made and a strong determina tion to try to avoid them in the fu- I ture. Let us add to the credit of the physicians in question, that not one has complained to us. and we make this explanation in justice to the physicians of Gaffney, nearly every one of whom we believe to be generous, noble, wholesouled gentle men. with money in a bank is not so ant ‘ spend it as when he has it on lib person. With $1 or $•> in one’s pock n t, as soon as it is "broken’’ it is gen erallv recognized the balance will soon go. A bank account also stimulates thrift, because having a few dollars put away makes one want to have more, so that thev will often work harder than if it is just a hand-to- mouth existence, with their loose change always in their pockets,—or rather their loose change out of it. because it is so hard to keep. If you deposit your money, you put it where it will be safe. It may mean the beginning of a habit that may bring wealth to you. Don’t carry to your homes your wages, or what you get from the sale of pro (luce. Pay your bills, then bank the balance. It will avoid all pos sibility of loss by fire or robbery. PRESS COMMENT. How to Hold a State Fair. Charlotte Observer.) The Gaffney. S. C.. Ledger energet ically voices "the expression of thou sands of people who attend the Stite Fair” against the gross extortion to which they are subjected in Colum bia every year Its complaints are identical in nature with those long made in this State against the fieec- in" of visitors to the State Fair at Raleigh. Last year we suggested a remedy for this and other short comings of the North Carolina fair, and wo are going to repeat it now. Let no town have the State Fair as a matter of course and with the understanding that visitors to it may be robbed with impunity. Editor DeCamp jumps on the fair management and the business people of Columbia with both feet.
