He produced the facts to the effecr that a man in New York City went to London and bought Amer‘ lean watches there, brought them back to this countr - and sold them cheaper than the trust prices here and then made money on them, be cause there is no duty on American goods shipped back Into this country after being sold abroad. If that does not show up the fact that thp present tariff is a palpable robbery of the American consumer for the benefit of the American trusts and that the tar iff is the mother of trusts, then what the mischief does not show? Some o the Republican big guns in the house of representatives have made an at tempt to answer Mr. Rainey, but the/ have floundered and fallen back imo the Pit dug by their own bad logie C ® of them .actually admitted that these watch companies did sell watch es cheaper in the foreign countries than they did In this country, and at tempted to justify it by saying that they were compelled to do it in order to keep their factories going and keep labor at work. The truth of the bus iness is. that since the Dingley tariff was enacted there are seventeen less watch factories at work in this coun try than before, all put out of busi ness by the trust, and that the trust now employs more female and child labor, therefore cheaper, than it had before in the history of the watch business in this country. This Is only 0"-> illustration of the workings of tb Dingley tariff in the interests of the trusts. There are hundreds of other instamces and the Democrats will show them up as fast as thev can get to them. It is going to make the tariff one of the paranfount issues of the coming congressional cam paign. The issue win be squarely made. That man has had many cases in Wickersham’s court, and has not lost anv of them, though Wickersham has been obliged to set asld" the verdict of juries sometimes to enable his friend to win. Wicker sham leased a portion of this lot to a saloon man ami gambler, and a sa loon and gambling business is now conducted there. The place Is patron ized by women of evil fame. It is just across the street from the court house and is onlv two blocks from his residence. Wickersham’s revenue from the lot is $4,500 per year. Having leased his valuable town lot for gambling purposes Wicker sham in his instructions to grand ju ries has told them that they must not indict for gambling. There is a se vere law in Alaska against gambling. Some time ago the house of repre sentatives filed articles of impeach ment against Judge Swayne, United States district judge for the State of Florida, one of the main charges be ing absenteeism from his district, which he could reach at any time within twenty-four hours. As an illustration of how this ad ministration does things to suit it self regardless of the wishes of the people interested, or the character of the men it outs in high places, the nomination and probable confirmation of one Wickersham to be a judge in Alaska is one of the most glaring. Here are tbe facts concerning this rot ten transaction on the part of this Roosevelt administration: In December last the president named Janies Wickersham as judge of the third division of Alaska. His con firmation has given the senators of the judiciary committee no little trou ble. For hardlv had the president named Wickersham before evidence of a most unusual kind began to How in upon the committee. It was shown that WicUarsham. while living in the State of Washington, had been indict ed for riot and leadin" mobs, that he has been indicted for subornation of perjury in connection with a fraudu lent attempt to acquire title to some government land, and he had been in dicted and convicted of seducing a youn°' girl, and finally he had ob tained the court records in this se duction case and has done away with them. The judiciary committee after five months discussion, have reluctantly reported Wickersham’s name to tne senate by a bare majority vote. Dur ing nearly all of that time Wicker sham has been here in Washington lobbying for himself for months the capitol has swarmed with his lob byists, who are more numerous and higher priced ones than ever appear ed here to work for the confirmation of any other judge. These lobbyists are "aid by Wickersham and his friends and favorites, who hop© for and expect further favors if he should be confirmed. In fac.- one of these lobbyists openly announced that Wick' ersham would be confirmed and that when he is confirmed they will own Alaska and run it in their own inter ests and to suit themselves. Wickersham has already served on© term of four years as judge of the district court of Alaska. But] when, he was named and confirmed thes© indictments and convictions were entirely unknown to the presi dent and th© Judiciary committee and both he and his spotted career were entirely unknown to the people of the far away Alaska. But "nis term of of fice has given them ample time to learn what kind of a man he is. The tetsimony and evidence before the Ju diciary committee brought to light) some very unusual conditions. It ap peared clearly that lajlh the lawyers and the people at large fear and dr©ad Wickersham because of his biased and prejudiced nature, and his arro gance and unbending tyranny and bis blackmail record. It appears that he ba B few favorites and that they nev er lose cases, though the*/ are always litigating because if the juries do not return their verdicts in favor of the favorites. Wickersham sets aside the verdicts and grants new trials. This has resulted in his deciding one case WEEKLY WEATHER BULLETIN May For tbe Week Ending 8 A. M. 14, 1908. The week was usually cool.
