The charge arose out of convict work on Sunday when it was ascertained that they were paid the special indictment was drawn on the charge of Sunday work. Asheville, N. C., May 2.—Both morning and afternoon sessions of the Woman’s Home Missionary board, .Methodist Episcopal church, South, on Tuesday were taken up wiih the read ing of various committee reports, the principal interest attaching to that of Dr. C. F. Reid, superintendent of the Pacific coast missions. Dr. Reid has organized two Japanese churches in California and has several schools for Chinese and Japanese under his care. Dr. Rir announced that none of his schools or churches were injured by the recent earthquake. The question of personal tithing— paying one-tenth to the mission cause, was freely discussed this afternoon. The report by Miss Emma Tucker deveioped the fact that there are now 5,249 women of the Methodist Episoo pal church; south, paying "tribute tu the way of tithes. Gainesville, Ga., May 2.—A fight be tween John Tucker Dorsey and Cur tis Twitty, which occurred Sunday morning, and which was not regarded at first more than a slight difficulty, is about to terminate v6ry seriously. Twitty is unconscious from a frac ture of the skull at the base of the brain, with but little chance of re covery. Dorsey is i^t large, and a warrant has been sworn out against him and placed in the hands of Sneriff Crow, chargi - him with assault with intent to murder. Dorsey is a son of the late Colonel J. N. Dorsey, while Twit ty is a sou of J. N. Twitty, of Twitty bill fame. The seriousness of the af frar was no! known until Tuesday, the matter hawng been kept veqf quiet. The,prominence of the families of tht young men lends additional interest tc the unfortunate affair. EURICK MUENTER, Who Has Disappeared Since the Sud den Death of His Wife. RUINS OF GRACE CHURCH. Wounded by Negroes. Nashville, May 2.—A HopkinsvUle) K>\, dispatch to the Banner says Dial Policeman E. J. Dougherty and Amos Haydou, of that place, were shot and dangerously wounded by four negroes about 7 miles from Hopkinsville at au early hour Wednesday morning. Wal lace l^ayne, a negro, had made a mur derous assault on J. W. Rives, a prom inent while citizen and officers had gone to the negro's house to arres* him when they wore flred upon. Ofti cer DoSgherty fell with a bullet in his right breast and Hayden received a wound just over the heart. The negroes finally surrendered and were brought to Hopkinsville and placed in jail. RusseM, of this plaee, has received a telegram from his brother in Bellevue, Tex., the town which was swept away by a cyclone last Friday, to lire effect that bis son. R. L. Russell, ami wife and five children were instantly killed in the cyclone. Mr. Russell's kroih- er miraculously ascaped death in the terrible catastrophe, but he is the only one living in that family who remains to tell of that terrible time. Meridian, Miss., May 2.— Fire de stroyed the immense building and stock of the Winner-Kleln company, wholesale and retail department stores, at 2 o'clock Wednesday morn ing, causiug a loss of over $lo0,00<>. The loss is practically covered by in surance. The prevalence of high winds threatened a general conflagra tion, but heroic work by the firemen prevented such catastrophe. Eight Injured in Explosion. New York, May 2.—Eight uncon scious men were taken out of the Me- Adoo tunnel under the Hudson river, connecting Jersey City and Manhattan Island Wednesday, after an explosion in the depths of the tunnel. Five of them were removed to hospitals in Jersey City: and four were not expect ed to recover. The explosion is sup- posd to have been caused by gas. Cyclone Visits Tennessee Towns. Nashville, Tenn., May 2.—A special from Dresden, Tenn., says that a cy clone swept over the district 16 miles north of Dresden Tuesday night. Many houses and barns were blown down, stock killed and telephone lines were wrecked. Y., May 2.—It is un derstood that the ecclesiastical court of the Protestant Episcopal church, which tried Algernon G. Crapsey for heresy, will meet once more for con sultation with Judge Moore, of Ba tavia, N. Y., where the findings will also be prepared for presentation to Bishop Walker. It is thought that the .court will meet about May 13th, as it goes out of existence May 15th, and as it will take about 15 days to transcribe the notes of the trial, which include about 90,000 words.
