Farm Lands Surely Advancing! Even Uncle Sam is getting smart enough to know that farms are the safest of securities, so much so that Congress is discussing the wisdom of admitting farm lands as security in National Banks at one-half their value. I have always wondered why Real Estate was not considered first-class security by the Government. “The farmer feeds us all.” Then why should farms not be the maximum of security? When this is the case, and the Government has competent appraisers appointed to assess property, instead of teaching the owners to perjure themselves as to values, as is the case in the present South Carolina oath, we will arrive at more truth and honor, which will produce confidence in all lines—a thing badly needed. I think any Bank or individual could safely loan at full assessment as now returned. Besides this, the farmers are fast learning how to till the soil and market their crops for better results, which increases the dividends and naturally makes land more valuable. Therefore, if you want to make safe investments for profits, trade in land with good judgment. You can make it by hundreds and thousands if you are smart enough. J.
