That Idyllic picture of the rural English home life, together with Its flight to the most aristocratic cir cles of English society, "Dora Thorne" is proving one of the most interesting and successful new plays of the pres ent season. The book of "Dora Thorne" had a wonderful vogue some years ago, and still has a steady cir culation. This theme is brought out in the play of “Dora Thome,” as in the book, with wonder fully original setting; tears and laughter follow in quick succession; sincere heart ‘ iterest is manifest at every turn, interwoven with the most powerful of all themes—“love.” “It is love which m; .es the world go ’round.” “Dora Thorne” will be seen tonight at The Star Theatre. Baseball for Gaffney? A subject now’ quite generally under discussion is, whether or not Gaffney will he able to boast of a baseball team this ■summer. If any such course is considered the time is now rlne for some action to bo taken. With the exception of Gaffney, almost ev ery town of any size in the State has organized teams, selected their mana ger and other officials, and have the situation well in hand. Some have even gone so far as to have nicked their teams, and quite a few have ac tually played games. And all the time the word baseball has not been spoken in Gaffnev at all. How’ever, it cannot be disputed that the baseball fex’er and the baseball spirit is here, for whenever the sub ject is brought into a crowd or intro- Ppetty Ground*. This court, when completed, will be one of the best In the State. A hedge of evergreen has been planted arefund the plot of ground surrounding and owned by the mill, and beautiful shade trees have been set out along the sidewalks ap proaching the mill. There Is no doubt but that when this park has been beautified to the extent of the plans now p.oposed. It will be one of the prettiest of anv small town In the South. The mere fact that Mr. H. D. Wheat, president of the Irene mills, is back of this enternrise is sufficient guarantee that It will be. Notes from Union. Union, March 20.—The Ledger comes to me regularly, and it is very readable, as it gives the news briefly and Impartially. It should be a wel come visitor in every home. • For some cause unknown to the writer, the sound of saw and hammer is not heard in the “City of Violets” (TTi ion) as has been the case hereto fore. The weather Is cold for this sea son of the year. It seems that win ter. and not snring, is to return. Trade is not so brisk these days. Labor controls these activities more than want and need, or supply and demand. We are getting on splendidly with out a dispensary. Rome localities in thp city have more pious appearances despite the small amount which may be ordered. It is not so convenient for those who d° not know how to get it. Hence, it is so much the better that thp dispensary is gone. There will he -v large crop of cotton planted this year, judging from the amount of guano which is being car ried into the various sections of the country. Ledger Reader. Wood-Roberts. A marriage of local interest occur red in Shelby last week, when Mr. Fletcher Wood, of Gaffney, and Miss Susie Roberts, of Shelby, were mar ried at the home of the bride’s pa rents. Rev. G. R. Hamrick, of this city, performed the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Wood are making their home in the eifv af nresent. Mr. Wood is a well-known voung man of this el tv and his many friends are congratulating him and his bride up on having been successfully launched | forth upon the sea of matrimony.
