The legislature of South Carolina
meets next month. The representa

mind that the people of this county
want good roads, and if it is necessary
to have any special legislation in re

“The New Birth means more than a
reformation, an amendment, a moral
change or outward alteration of life.
It means a thorough change of heart,

Remanded to Jail-
Dr. Matthews, charged with wife
murder, was remanded to jail in
Greensboro after a hearing before i
Mayor Murphy of the witnesses for
the prosecution. The testimony of j
the three physicians and other wit- ■
neses showed he had during the day
made repeated attempts to be with his |
wife alone after it seemed she was on
the ^vay to recovery. The last suc
cessful effort while pretending to pray
they said was the Immediate cause of
her* death. Coroner Turner gave a
graphic description of the scene when
ho snatched the hypodermic out of
Matthews’ hand and saw it withdrawn
from the dying wife’s arm. Analysis
of the residue showed strychnine. All
the physicians said the original, cause
of the sickness was from morphine,
be of local interest, as the Methodists
had declared. The defendant put on
no witnesses. He was calm and col
lected, making no suggestions to the
attorneys, hut sat beside them and
his father, stolid, great beads of per
spiration forming on and rolling from
his forehead.
