The Are was caused by an over-heat. ed furnace. Sister Mary, one of the teachers, and her 25 pupils, who were on the third floor, could not get down tne stairs on account of the smoke. The teacher led the children to the win dows beneath where the firemen had stretched a net. Under the Sister’s directions the girls climbed out over the sill and one by one were assisted to drop, and were caught safely in the apparatus held by the firemen. After the last child had been cared for, Sis ter Mary herself reached the street by means of a ladder. Tie damage to the building was ■light. Perkins. Nashville, Nov. 32.—The sixteenth annual session of the Southern Edu- catjoual association will convene here this evening in conjunction with the association of colleges and prepara tory schools of the southern states, and continue in session on three days. Already there are a nnumber of well known southern educators in 'the city and many will arrive on the evening trains. Charlee D. McPresident, of the state normal colle ge, Greensboro. N. C., is president of the educational association, and Brown Ayers, presi <I«nt of the University of Tennessee, is president of the Association of Col leges and Preparatory Schools of the Southern States. Addresses of welcome on behalf of the city and state this evening will lie made by Governor Cox, and on behalf of the educational institutions, State Superintendent S. A, Mynders. Responses will be made by President Oaigshead, of Tulane university, of New Orleans, and Chancellor Fulton, of the University of Mississippi. J„ Nov. 22.—The western express on the Pennsylvania railroad, left last night carried a pas senger, George Stratford, a Jersey City photographer, who gave up $82.53 a month to go to Los Angeles, Calif., on the summons, bent, it is said, on distributing a fortune of many mil lions among his prospective heirs be fore his death. Stratford’s uncle Is Thomas Cricli- low, an Englishman, who fifteen years ago, invented a means of saving fuel in firing locomotives and then made an immense fortune. He crossed the Atlantic eighteen times in search o, a sister who was in search of him. She found him through a newspaper adver tisement and told him of his two nephews, George and Edward Strat ford. He invited them to visit him. George went and returned to Jersey City on Monday, resigned and is re turning to his uncle. J., Nov. 22.—Four men were blown to pieces by an ex plosion at the laboratory of the inter national Powder and Chemical compa ny at Parlin. Th«y ,were John Pierce. Frank Spratford, John Apple gate, J. W. Redpath, superintendent of the laboratory. What caused the ex plosion will never be known, as only the four men were in the building at the time. The building was a one-story frame structure, and because of the liability to explosions was separated from all ot.iieis in liw; plant, exoepi a store house, which caught fire aud was burned. It is legal document containing 07 lines in Lincoln’s handwriting. It is dated May 13, 1831. It sold for $50. The pardon of Elizabeth Shorter, a quarto docu ment. dated Washington, Nov. 5, 1804 and signed by President Lincoln brought $20.
