Sev eral bales were sold. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Clary, of this city, are happy over the birth of a little girl, which came last Wednee- day. Walter Humphries is buying cotton with W. C. Carpenter Instead of J. A. Carroll, as stated in our last Is sue. Carroll & Byers are unloading an other car load of Swift & Company's meats, for which they are wholesale distributing agents. Claude Sparks, of Jonesville, has accepted a position as salesman for Carroll & Byers, and will enter upon his duties in a few days. Kimsey O. Huskey has resigned his IMfsition with J. M. Nelson, the Star Clothier, and gone with Carroll & Byers as assistant bookkeeper. Mr. N. C. Snead, the city cotton weigher, weighed 278 bales of cotton Saturday. A few more bales were sold, but they went to the warehouses. The Ladies Aid Society of the Bu ford Street Methodist church will serve cream at the city park Thurs- day afternoon, beginning at 4 o'clock. Mayor Gaffney had two colored sports before him yesterday morning, one for a “plain drunk.” and the other for gambling. He fined them $2.50 each. Rev. J. W. Kilgo will hold the fourth quarterly conference of Buford Street station tomorrow night (Wednesday), at 7:30 o’clock. Every official is urged to he present. The Cherokee cotton growers met in the court house Saturday. The regu lar routine work was gone through, although there was not much to come to their attention, as they recently held a meeting. Bill Dawkins, colored, was tried be fore Commissioner J. B. Bell, of this citv, on a charge of retailing liquor. There was no evidence of Bill’s hav ing sold any of the “oh-be-joyful” re-j cently, and he was dismissed. Those who know Rev. Tom Leitch and Mr. Marshall, and have heard Marshall sing, will he glad to know that they are coming to Gaffney and will hold a ten days meeting at Lime stone Street church, beginning Octo ber 16th. Mr. Frank Mayfield, a prominent business man of Union, and Miss Coral Littlejohn, of White Plains, were! joined in marriage Sunday night. The] ceremony was performed at the home of the bride’s parents. Mr. and Mrs. Gaston Littlejohn. Mr. J. L. Spake, of this city, show ed us some grapes Saturday, from a second crop that came on his vines. They were of the Concord variety, and were large and well matured, though not so sweet as the first crop. There were only twelve or fifteen bunches of the second growth. Dr. Park Thomson has closed his dental parlors and discontinued the practice of denistry in Gaffney. He hasn’t decided, as yet, just where he will locate for the future. The Doc tor’s many friends in this city regret chat he has decided to move away, but their best wishes will follow him wherexer he may go. In this issue we publish the state ments of the National Bank of Gaff ney, the Gaffney Savings Bank, and the Merchants and Planters Bank of Gaffney. The two former show de posits of more than a quarter of a million dollars and the latter of $159.751.58. This is a remarkably good showing for our financial institu tions and one which they may justly j feel proud of. Those who heard Miss Pirrie’s | violin music at the First Baptist church Sunday morning were perfect ly charmed; and those in a position to know, pronounced her an artist m the use of that sweetest of all mu sical instruments. Her rendition of Handel’s Lardo was especially ap preciated. Miss Pirrie is instruct or of the violin a t Limestone College; and the congregation of the First Baptist hopes to have the pleas ure of hearing her again very soon. Superintendent Wood, of the Victor oil mill, was severely injured yester day morning by falling from a scaf fold at the mili. One arrti was dislo cated, and he was otherwise bruised about the body. Dr. Griffith set the injured arm; and Mr. Wood, though suffering considerably, was able to attend to his duties later in the day. A Small Fire. There was a small fire in the gin ning department of the Victor oil mill yesterday morning a little after eight o’clock. The fire company respon ded to the alarm, but the blaze, which was in some lint cotton, was extin guished before the reel reached the scene. The damage was slight.
