An ex-Confederate soldier who serv ed in the Southern army with disting uishing gallantry was telling a group I in the Riggs House some interesting | stories of the davs that followed the ! surrender of Lee. T went to Memphis to live,” said ! he, “after Appomattox, and was one I of those who helped organize the Ku Klux Klan. I have never been i ashamed of my connection with the celebrated organization for it did a tremendous lot of good in Tennessee. \ Gen. N. B. Forrest, the greatest cav alry chief who ever rode into battle, | was supreme commander of the 'K. K. ! K.,’ and whenever Forrest issued an ! order it was obeyed to the letter. The ! order had a Supreme Court, of which : Gen. Albert Pike, the illustrious Ma son, was chief justice, and this court, I always sifted testimony for and against any accused person before punishment was inflicted. Two prom inent newspaper editors of Memphis were also members of the court. The total membership in the regularly or ganized Ku Klux Klaus of Tennessee was not less than 72,000, and never in the history of the world were men more closely banded or more loyal to each other. “I was a member of the ‘klan’ for at least five years, and my separation from it was caused by a change of residence. In that time I am positive that the sentence of death was in flicted upon but three men, which goes to to show that the Ku Klux did not mete out summary vengeance on small offenders. Nor were its mem bers, except in rare instances, citi zens of low repute. On the contrary, only men of good character were in vited to join, and Gen. Forrest was particular in seeing that only those of discretion and temperate habits were made members. “But Tennessee at the time of the existence of the Ku Klux was in^ra.li- cal hands; scalawags and carpetbag gers ruled the land to its sorrow, and Parson Brownlow, then Governor, had a law passed which made it a capital offence for any man to he convicted of ku kluxing or belonging to the or der. He even imported detectives from Chicago, who were instructed to find out all about the mysterious band which sent fort a its warning in let ters ornamented with skulls and cross- bones ami daggers, and whose doings struck terror to the hearts of white and black miscreants alike. "One of these detectives came on to Nashville. He was a bright fellow and ambitious to make a rqcord. Brownlow gave him his orders, and he set out to discover things by pre tending to l)e a rabid Southerner, who was keenly anxious to become a K. K. K. Gen. Forrest learned all about the man and his plans, and gave it out that he should he taken througn a mock initiation which would reveal nothing of the real Ku Klux secrets. After this bogus ceremony the spy was told lie was eligible to a second | degree, which would reveal to him This he took, and a Kept Their Clothes Dry. Back in the ’50’s, when Abraham Lincoln was little more than an ob- rcure country lawyer, he was fond of a joke. At one time he made the late Judge Stephen T. Logan the butt of one and came near being placed un der the displeasure of the court for. the deed. While riding with a cavalcade of lawyers who went with the jurist around the circuit. Lincoln was going from Lincoln. Logan county, to Dela- van, Tazewell county, both in Illinois. A marsh was encountered on the Dela- van prairie. The expanse of water before them was about half a mile wide, and nearly all the lawyers be lieved that Salt Lake creek had broken its banks and formed a new channel. Lincoln knew better, and thought this an opportune time to get a joke on the judge and his brother lawyers. So he pretended to join in the general be lief of the party, and said; “This is a pretty mess! Now we either shall have to swim the river or go twelve miles out of the way to find a bridge.” “How can we safely swim this swol len stream?” one of the riders asked.; “There is only one safe way.” sug gested Lincoln. “We must remove all | our clothing and tie it on our backs! to keep it dry, then ride through.” “But, Mr. Lincoln," said .Bulge Lo-1 gan, “this indeed would be a most un- ; dignified manner of doing anvthing.” j “Very well, your honor,” said Lin.-, coin, “you may stand upon ceremony; j but I intend to have a dry suit on; when I get to Delavan.” Fitting his action to his words, the lanky lawyer began to disrobe. Others! followed promptly, and by the time all were ready for the plunge the dignified jurist had stripped himself. The rid ers, led by Lincoln, bent up their legs, like half-opened jack-knives, and with light reins and urging their steeds on to a swim they reached the other side. At no time was the water deep enough to more than wet the fetlocks of their 1 horses’ feet. Lincoln looked toward the learned judge and received a withering glance' that took a wav all desire to even smile. He feared the explosion tlyit evidently was near at hand, so he thought to head it off. “Judge, do you think a bridge across that stream would seriously interfere with navigation?” was his query.
