C., Monday to assist in the funeral services of Capt. J. D. Moore, who died there rather suddenly Sunday morning. Mr. Hickson was formerly pastor of the First Baptist church of Gastonia, and was a close friend of the deceased. Meeting of Farmers Mutual Ins. Co. The annual meeting of the Farmers Mutual Insurance company was held in the court house last Friday, August 4th, with a majority of the directors and about one hundred policy holders present. The president and secretary and treasurer were present and sub mitted the best reports during the en tire existence of the company. This company, while purely an assessment company, has never been forced to make an extra pro-rata assessment, but has always had sufficient funds 1 in the treasury „io meet all losses promptly, and ha's already paid a good amount to policy holders for losses, as will he shown by reference to the statement published in another col umn. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: R. M. Gaffney, president; G. W. McKown, vice-presi dent; J. Eh Jefferies, secretary and treasurer; A. Bettis, general agent; D. \\\ Cooper, assistant general agent; and three directors for each township. As will he shown by the statement published in another column .this com pany has now on hand a nice surplus which is being loaned to members of the association. The increase in in surance for the past twelve months has been $52,000. The officers of this company propose, by economical busi ness management, to furnish undoubt ed indemnity at the leas* cost consist ent with perfect safety. The “B. B.” Club Entertained. On Monday evening Miss Jessie Lipscomb entertained the “R. B.” club complimentory to her guests, Misses Lillie May and Maggie Dog- gett, of Shelby, N. C. The house was tastefully decorated with pot plants and cut flowers. The punch bowl be ing presided over by Miss Margaret Cowan and Sadie Lipscomb. Pursuant to the call of the chair man, the executive commute met in the court house on Saturday and res cinded their action taken at the former meeting, at which over the vigorous protest of the chairman they decided that instead of having a second pri mary the two highest candidates should run in the general election. By its action the committee sustain ed the chairman’s position in every pa- ticular. Chairman Bell offered his resignation after the committee had, by their action, sustained him, but the committee was unanimous in refusing to accept same. An Announcement.
