Montgomery, Ala., May 31.—After two hours of a preliminary trial before Justice of the Peace M. H. Screws, John Randolph, who shot and instantly killed his cousin, Judge F. C. Ran dolph, last Sautrday, was adjudged not guilty of any offense and was dis charged without bond. The justice held that it was a clear case of self-defense, and that the ac cused was forced to shoot to save his ©wn life, as shown by all the wit nesses. Several witnesses were examined, all of whom showed that the deceased had made repeated threats on the life of the defendant and had told on sev eral occasions that he intended to kili him. As soon as the decision of Justice Screws was made up, he announced it, having adjourned court and returned to his office amid the good wishes of a great crowd who had gathered to see the end of the trial. All the parties are negroes. Carolina Seeks Immigrants. Raleigh. N. C., May 31.—Governor Glenn says he is doing all in his pow er to bring immigration to North Caro lina. He and Senator Simmons will discuss this vital question before the board of agriculture June 5. Electrical Equipment for Japan. New York. May 31.—Contracts amounting to fully $5,000,000 calling for the shipment with all dispatch of electrical equipment, machines and tools, have been placed In this mar ket on Japanese occount. The orders were mostly closed by the New Y’ork representatives of Japanese firms. The machinery is for installation in the principal government shipbuilding yards and arsenals. Because of the inauguration of a war tax ranging from 5 per cent to 10 per cent on va rious foreign equipment entering Ja pan alter July 1, most of the orders call for shipim nt overland to the Pa cific. May 31.—Governor Carter, in a message vetoing portions of thej appropriation bill, has called attention to the fact that in a majority of in stances the salaries of white employes of the government of the territory were reduced, while the salaries of the Hawaiian employes were increas ed. Montgomery, Ala., May 31.—In a report issued by Commissioner of Agri culture R. R. Poole, it is shown that the reduction in the acreage in cotton in the stale, as compared to last year, is 12.01 per cent; of commercial fer tilizers used, 8 per cent. The condi tion of the cotton crop is 70 per cent, the season three weeks late, and the crop grassy and In had shape. Com missioner Poole places the condition of the cotton crop that this time as worse than at any time in 30 years, so far as the grass is concerned. Many fields already planted will have to be plowed up and not a few will be aban doned entirely. The Penn Mutual pays dividends after the first year. The Union Central loan value is not available until after the completion of the third year, and then after deducting the fourth premium, with interest, which takes pretty nearly all the first loan value stated in contract.
