This feat was commented on by nearly all of the railroad journals of tbe world as be ing a remarkable example of railroad construction. “Mr. Tripp, under whose direction the Tonopah railroad was so quickly and completely constructed, was born in Kennobunk, Me., in 1829. The son of parents will tilled the soil, he re ceived what little education he could gather from the district schools of the county in which he was born. At the early age of IS he left home to battle with the big world. Thrown upon his own resources, he went to Boston, where he went to work for the Boston & Maine railroad and learned the art of railroad telegranhy, in which he became an adept. He was among the first to learn this profession, and, with Robert Pitcairn. Andrew Carne gie and other noted men. formed the first telegraphers’ union. In 1801, at tracted by the oil excitement, he went to Pittsburg, where he accepted a po sition as clerk for the Aladdin Oil Company. Oil was then a manufae-j tured product, and when the natural petroleum was discovered, he was made manager of the same eomnany. Receiving a more inviting offer to en ter railroad work, he resigned his po sition with the oil eomnany and went with the Alleghaney Valley railroad in the freight and passenger depart ment, and when he resigned to go with the RalMmore & Ohio railroad in 1882, he was general yardmaster of the company. He was general vardmaster for the Baltimore & and finally their life becomes a wreck, ami a great many land on the chain- gang or at the gallows. There are in the human race as great and remarkable differences in genius, temperaments, characteris tics, powers and accomplishments as there are varieties among the trees of the forest, from the magnificent oak and towering pine down to the grace ful willow by the water course; or, as there are among the flowers and vines of the field and garden, from the rose and honeysuckle that runs along the lattice work on the porch to the graceful and almost sympathetic ivy which seeks to hide the crumb ling ruins of some old church tower from the rude gaze of the passer-by. As there are many varieties of trees and flowers, so there are many va rieties of men, we might say. While some are cut and fashioned for one thing, there are others for other things. Each and every young man, as he first starts out in business for himself should he sure that he takes up the work that has weighed the heaviest on his mind, and that he thinks he is best fitted for, and then strive to make the very best of it.
