The Weckerling brewery, part of the New Orleans Brewing asscociation plant, has been destroyed by fire. The cause Is mysterious, some alleging an explosion. The loss is estimated at $200,000. James B. Duke, president of the American Tobacco company, is report ed to be seriously ill at h:s residence in New York from blood poisoning. The trouble, it is stated, came from a corn which was removed several days ago. The strike of the coach builders em ployed, according to a dispatch from Paris, Fiance, is assuming serious proportions. An increase in wages is demanded by the men, about 25.000 of whom are now out. Automobile mak ers are particularly affected. Reports have been current recently of the approaching betrothal of Kin.: Alfonso, of Spain, to the Aren Duchess Gabrielle, daughter of Archduke Fred erick, of Austria, but It is impossible to obtain an offeial confirmation of th< rumors. On the other hand, they have been unoffcially denied. The Russian Defender of Port Arthur Arrives at Home. St. Petersburg, March 1.—Lieuten ant General Stoessels arrived in St. Petersburg this morning from Moscow. A quarter of an hour before his train was due it looked as if not more than a hundred persons would be pres ent to welcome the defender of Port Arthur, but their number augmented , rapidly and when the train steamed into the de-pot many hundreds of peo ple, especially women, crowded on the platform. War Minister Sakharoff and Admir al Zelotti on behalf of the admiralty welcomed General Stoessels, who was loucjly cheered and » . sented with flowers. After receiving the personal congratulations of friends, the general, looking bronzed and in good health traversed the cheering crowd to a reception room, stopping now and then to shake hands with admirers. Behind the general came Mrs. Stoessels lean ing on the arm of a military officer. She looked to be even more bronzed than her husband, and smiled happi ly at the warm welcome accorded him. Dallas, March 1.—Mrs. Matilda Moore, 94 years old, one of the few remaining pensioners of the war of 1812, died from blood poisoning caused by a pin scratch. Her husband, Ziza Moore, served in the war of 1812 from Tennessee and his discharge bears the signature of General Andrew Jack son. Immigration on the Increase. New York," March 1.—Immigration statistics show more than 130 per cent increase of newcomers during the month of February during the corre sponding period of last year.
