A Novel Claim.

The overw. elming vote against the
dispensary in Cherokee county has had
a good effect upon the State board of
control. The board has now granted
the petition signed by nine-tenths of
the citizens of Elloree for the removal
of the dispensary from that town. Be
fore the Cherokee election, the board
refused similar petitions from Saluda
and Dillon. Hub Evans voted against
removing the Elloree dispensary, but
he was overruled by the new members,
Messrs. Boykin and Towill. Our
faith in the integrity and fairness of
John Bell Towill, expressed when he
was elected, has not yet been shaken.

New Cotton Mill for Gaffney.

penter have sold the old carpet mill to
an enterprising business man of Gaff
ney. The owner will at once begin to
place machinery for the purpose of
carding, spinning and weaving, and
hopes to have it in operation by
March 1st next, to be run day and
night. In a conversation with the new
owner he said that there were plenty
of drug stores and mercantile estab
lishments in Gaffney, but we need
more enterprises to support them. We
wish him success.

The Gaffney Ledger says that there
is no denying the fact that ”a good
deal of whiskey” is being shipped to
Gaffney every day, but at the same
time “there is a decided improvement
in the sobriety of our people.” That
is something gained certainly. But
1 there is “a good deal of whiskey” be
ing shipped into Newberry In spite of
! the presence of the dispensary here.—

No. 97 is a mail train only, and Nos.
37 and 38 are “the vestibules;” and
